Rethinking resilient agriculture: From Climate-Smart Agriculture to Vulnerable-Smart Agriculture

Hossein Azadi et al.

Summary: Climate-Smart Agriculture aims to improve agricultural output and protect the environment, but often overlooks small-scale farmers. This study proposes enhancing agricultural intelligence by adding elements of small-scale farmers and introducing the concept of Vulnerable-Smart Agriculture. The research emphasizes the importance of hearing farmers' voices in decision-making and suggests developing a new framework to further enhance intelligent agriculture.

Institutional constraints to groundwater resource management in arid and semi-arid regions: a Straussian grounded theory study

Fatemeh Rahimi-Feyzabad et al.

Summary: The study revealed that institutional structural and functional weakness is the main issue in groundwater resource management. Cultural elements, legal weakness, and weak organizational management also impact groundwater resource management. Additionally, unauthorized exploitation through drilling wells and unplanned extraction is identified as a major cause of the problem, with the implementation of water engineering and control measures proposed as a key strategy.

Local climate and biodiversity affect the stability of China's grasslands response to drought

Wenjie Huang et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences in the vulnerability of grassland ecosystems to drought among different grassland types in China, with varying levels of resistance, resilience, and recovery time. The results provide a scientific basis for taking appropriate management measures to mitigate the impacts of drought events on various types of grassland ecosystems in the future.

Global assessment of future sectoral water scarcity under adaptive inner-basin water allocation measures

Zhongwei Huang et al.

Summary: This study examines the potential of applying adaptive inner-basin water allocation measures (AIWAM) to mitigate water scarcity in the future, finding it can significantly reduce water scarcity for nonagricultural sectors but may increase it for irrigated cropland. AIWAM provides useful scenarios for designing strategies to reduce future population exposure to water scarcity, particularly in densely populated basins and regions.

Smallholder farmers' livelihood vulnerability to climate change-induced hazards: agroecology-based comparative analysis in Northcentral Ethiopia (Woleka Sub-basin)

Amogne Asfaw et al.

Summary: Ethiopia is highly vulnerable to climate change impacts, particularly smallholder farmers living in kolla agroecology. Different biophysical and socioeconomic attributes play a role in the vulnerability of smallholder farmers in different agroecologies and cropping seasons. Targeted interventions should aim to enhance adaptive capacity and reduce sensitivity to climate change risks.

Climate change risk perceptions and agricultural adaptation strategies in vulnerable riverine char islands of Bangladesh

Zobaer Ahmed et al.

Summary: The study reveals that residents of riverine char islands perceive droughts, river erosion, and floods as major climatic risks. Furthermore, it indicates that char dwellers are more exposed to diverse climatic hazards. Additionally, the study shows that char inhabitants have employed various adaptation strategies in agriculture to respond to existing climate change risks.

Who are the losers? Gendered-migration, climate change, and the impact of large scale land acquisitions on food security in coastal Tanzania

Kilian Nasung Atuoye et al.

Summary: The recent wave of large scale land acquisitions in low-income countries has sparked intense debate due to its impact on livelihoods and ecology, influenced by complex unequal power relations. Research shows that male non-migrants are more likely to report food insecurity due to land acquisitions, while individuals who have experienced drought are less likely to do so. These findings suggest a policy focus on smallholder agriculture for climate change adaptation.
