Sensing the destination: Development of the destination sensescape index

Daniela Buzova et al.

Summary: Despite the increasing academic interest in the sensory dimension of the tourist experience, there is a lack of measurement instruments for evaluating the sensory stimuli perceived by tourists during a destination visit. This study addresses this gap by developing a composite index to assess the sensory destination panorama, and establishes the psychometric validity and reliability of the measurement tool through rigorous empirical studies. The operationalisation of the destination sensescape construct provides a useful tool for Destination Marketing Organisations (DMOs) and opens up possibilities for future quantitative sensory studies.

Novelty in tourism experiences: the influence of physical staging and human interaction on behavioural intentions

Ingvild H. Blomstervik et al.

Summary: By drawing on social exchange theory and service-dominant logic, this study investigates how physical staging and human interaction influence visitors' behavioral intentions in experiences with varying levels of novelty. The results confirm the interrelationship between the variables and the moderating effect of novelty, showing that the level of novelty in an experience affects the impact of both physical staging and human interaction on behavioral intentions. The findings have important implications for the tourism industry, especially for tourism companies looking to enhance visitor experiences.
