Catalina L. Toma

Summary: This article reviews evidence supporting the social compensation hypothesis of online dating, suggesting that individuals facing challenges in traditional dating are more likely to turn to and benefit from online dating. The study identifies three categories of psychosocial vulnerabilities that hinder the initiation of romantic relationships and highlights positive associations between these vulnerabilities and online dating use. However, gaps exist in understanding the outcomes experienced by individuals with these vulnerabilities and the mechanisms through which vulnerabilities lead to increased use of online dating.

Katie K. Koo et al.

Summary: The study found that male students, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and those majoring in humanities showed higher levels of acculturative stress and lower satisfaction with college experiences, while international students reported decreased stress and increased satisfaction over time. Factors such as satisfaction with college experiences, English proficiency, social connectedness, and self-esteem were significant predictors of acculturative stress. Additionally, acculturative stress at the beginning of the year and satisfaction with college experiences at the end of the year reciprocally affected each other over a year.

How Adolescents Use Social Media to Cope with Feelings of Loneliness and Anxiety During COVID-19 Lockdown

Verolien Cauberghe et al.

Summary: The study suggests that for adolescents, using social media as a proactive coping strategy during the COVID-19 quarantine to deal with feelings of anxiety can be beneficial, more so than coping with feelings of loneliness. Anxiety can indirectly affect happiness through active coping, while loneliness is more likely to lead adolescents to use social media for coping. Humorous coping is positively correlated with happiness, but is not influenced by feelings of loneliness or anxiety.
