An investigation across 45 languages and 12 language families reveals a universal language network

Saima Malik-Moraleda et al.

Summary: This study examines the language brain areas across 45 different languages and finds similar topography, selectivity, and inter-connectedness among them. These similarities may enable the language system to handle shared linguistic features.

The brain signature of emerging reading in two contrasting languages

Katarzyna Chyl et al.

Summary: Despite dissimilarities among scripts, a universal hallmark of literacy in skilled readers is the convergent brain activity for print and speech. In this study, speech-print convergence was higher for transparent Polish than opaque English in the right temporal area associated with phonological processing, while it was higher for English than Polish in left fusiform associated with visual word recognition. These findings suggest that speech-print convergence is a universal marker of reading even at the beginning of reading acquisition with minor variations.

Anatomy and physiology of word-selective visual cortex: from visual features to lexical processing

Sendy Caffarra et al.

Summary: This article reviews the research progress over the past 20 years on how the human brain extracts linguistic information from visual symbols. From early models based on non-human primate object recognition to recent functional neuroimaging studies, researchers have delved into the mechanisms of how the brain processes language information. With an integrated approach combining structural, functional, and electrophysiological findings, a more comprehensive view of the neural circuitry involved in visual word recognition has been proposed, highlighting the importance of posterior-anterior differentiation in ventral occipitotemporal cortex for processing written language.
