The role of alexithymia as a risk factor for self-harm among adolescents in depression-A systematic review

Summary: This systematic review explores the relationship between alexithymia and non-suicidal self-harm among adolescents with depression. It found that both depression and alexithymia are significant risk factors for self-harming behavior, with self-harming groups showing higher scores on alexithymia and depression compared to control groups. These findings suggest that alexithymia may be a valuable target for prevention and intervention in adolescents at risk for self-harm.

Intra/interpersonal Functions of Non-suicidal Self-injury in Adolescents with Major Depressive Disorder: The Role of Emotion Regulation, Alexithymia, and Childhood Traumas

Summary: This study examines non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior, its functions and associated factors like childhood trauma, alexithymia, empathy, and emotion regulation, in adolescents suffering from depression. Results show that the majority of adolescents have engaged in NSSI behavior at least once, with affect regulation and marking distress being the most frequent intrapersonal functions and toughness and interpersonal boundaries being the most common interpersonal functions. Factors associated with NSSI include emotion regulation abilities, alexithymia, and childhood trauma.

Implicit Associations of Nonsuicidal Self-Injury with Relief in Posttraumatic Stress and Depressive Disorders

Summary: This study investigates the association between non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and emotional relief motives in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depressive disorders. Using a novel laboratory measure, the study found that individuals with lifetime PTSD showed stronger NSSI-emotional relief associations compared to those without PTSD. Furthermore, this effect was influenced by a PTSD by depressive disorder interaction, suggesting that the association was stronger in individuals with PTSD and no lifetime depressive disorder. These findings highlight the importance of using a multi-method approach to understand NSSI motives associated with different symptom profiles.

Summary: The study found a high prevalence of recent NSSI in patients receiving outpatient psychiatric treatment in Norway. NSSI is significantly more prevalent in patients with personality disorders than in patients with other diagnoses, mainly due to a significantly higher prevalence of NSSI with co-occurring SI in patients with personality disorders.

Summary: This study identified a shared neurobiological contributor to emotion regulation deficits in MDD and BPD characterized by decreased vlPFC activity, while also observing disorder-specific alterations. In MDD, there is a primary deficit in prefrontal activations, while BPD is defined by connectivity disruptions between the vlPFC and temporal emotion processing regions. These findings substantiate the different profiles of emotion regulation alterations observed in these disorders in neurobiological terms.
