A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Interventions to Decrease Cyberbullying Perpetration and Victimization

Joshua R. Polanin et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests a link between cyberbullying among school-age children and problem behaviors and adverse school performance constructs. Multiple school-based programs have been developed to reduce cyberbullying perpetration and victimization. A comprehensive review and meta-analysis of 50 studies with 320 effect sizes involving 45,371 participants found that these programs significantly decreased both cyberbullying perpetration and victimization, with implications for future policy and practice.

Cyberbullying prevalence in Australian adolescents: Time trends 2015-2020

Nora Trompeter et al.

Summary: This study examined the prevalence of cyberbullying and associated factors among Australian high-school students from 2015 to 2020. The findings showed an increase in cyber victimization over time, while cyber perpetration remained stable. However, during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, both cyber victimization and perpetration significantly rose. Although there were no reported increases in mental health difficulties in 2020, the increase in cyberbullying and decrease in coping self-efficacy are concerning.

The current status of Cyberbullying research: a short review of the literature

Matteo Vismara et al.

Summary: This review provides an updated discussion on cyberbullying (CBB) research. It addresses the conceptualization, including existing definitions and assessment tools. The affinity between CBB and other online problematic behaviors is examined, and the debate regarding whether CBB should be considered a mental condition is explored. Prevalence data and the populations at risk are reported, along with the distribution of this phenomenon and the limitations of current epidemiological studies. Furthermore, the review discusses solid evidence on the consequences of CBB on the mental health of victims and perpetrators, and suggests prevention and treatment strategies based on literature evidence. Despite the increasing number of studies on CBB in recent years, there are still numerous limitations which are discussed as future research priorities in the conclusion.
