Intensification of Pacific Trade Wind and Related Changes in the Relationship Between Sea Surface Temperature and Sea Level Pressure

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: This study applies a quantitative method to analyze the variation of Pacific trade winds from 1950 to 2020. It is found that the southeast and northeast trade winds have been strengthened since the mid to late 1990s, and have significantly affected the correlation between sea level pressure and sea surface temperature in the Pacific subtropical high area.

Assessment of 21st Century Changing Sea Surface Temperature, Rainfall, and Sea Surface Height Patterns in the Tropical Pacific Islands Using CMIP6 Greenhouse Warming Projections

Laxmikant Dhage et al.

Summary: This study assesses future changes in sea surface temperature, rainfall, and sea surface height in the tropical Pacific Islands using the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project-phase 6 (CMIP6). The results show that future rainfall will increase the most in areas with the greatest sea surface temperature warming, and there will also be an overall increase in interannual variability associated with the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). These findings are important for understanding uncertainty and supporting adaptation efforts in the tropical Pacific Islands.

Cross-hemispheric SST propagation enhances the predictability of tropical western Pacific climate

Cheng Sun et al.

Summary: A significant interhemispheric influence from the subtropical Southwest Pacific on the tropical western Pacific is found, with the sea surface temperature (SST) in the Southwest Pacific in spring showing strong coherence with TWP SST 6 months later. This influence is driven by the wind-evaporation-SST feedback mechanism, and can be successfully reproduced by climate models, improving the predictability of TWP SST.

Comparing surface wind stress and sea surface temperature biases over the tropical and subtropical oceans in subsets of CMIP6 models categorized by frozen hydrometeors-radiation interactions

J-L F. Li et al.

Summary: The hydrometeors-radiation interactions in climate models have different effects on the simulations of surface wind stress and sea surface temperature. The separated treatment of cloud ice and falling ice radiative properties in SON2 models performs better than NOS and SON1 models.

On the Asymmetry of the Tropical Pacific Thermocline Fluctuation Associated With ENSO Recharge and Discharge

Xiaofan Li et al.

Summary: The El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) plays a crucial role in successful climate prediction at seasonal-interannual time scales. Differences in intensities and spatial patterns associated with preceding thermocline fluctuation in the equatorial Pacific during the recharge and discharge phases of ENSO can be attributed to asymmetric wind stress anomalies related to El Nino and La Nina.

The North Pacific Blob acts to increase the predictability of the Atlantic warm pool

Yusen Liu et al.

Summary: The Northeast Pacific "Blob" has a significant influence on the prediction of the Atlantic warm pool (AWP), with signals being transmitted through the seasonal footprint mechanism to trigger anomalous atmospheric pressure and subsequently cause an increase in AWP sea surface temperature. The North Pacific Blob can serve as an effective predictor for the AWP.
