Effects of rare earth neodymium (Nd) and heat treatment on anti-corrosion behaviors of the AZ80 magnesium alloy

Minjie Liang et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of AZ80-xNd (x = 0, 0.5, and 1.0 wt.%) magnesium alloys is significantly affected by the rare earth neodymium (Nd) and heat treatment. The appropriate Nd content reduces the corrosion rate, but excessive Nd content decreases the corrosion resistance. The corrosion rate of solution treated alloys is higher than that of as-cast alloys, while the corrosion rate of aged alloys is the lowest. Rod-shaped Al3Nd phase and block-shaped Al2Nd phase effectively improve the corrosion resistance of the alloy.

Role of interfacial energy anisotropy in dendrite orientation in Al-Zn alloys: A phase field study

Yuhong Zhao et al.

Summary: The influence of interfacial energy anisotropy on dendrite morphology was investigated in Al-Zn alloys using the phase-field method. Different types of dendrite morphology were observed, and the occurrence of solute segregation holes and liquid grooves in dendrites was found to be influenced by the anisotropic interfacial energy. Supersaturation was found to be strongly correlated with the formation of liquid holes and liquid grooves as well as the degree of solute segregation. The relationship between interfacial energy anisotropy, Zn concentration, elastic anisotropy, and dendrite orientation deserves attention.

Microstructure, Mechanical Properties, and Corrosion Behavior of Mg-Al-Ca Alloy Prepared by Friction Stir Processing

Wen Wang et al.

Summary: Friction stir processing was used to improve the microstructure and mechanical properties of an Mg-Al-Ca alloy. The decrease in grain size, increase in strength, and decrease in corrosion rates were attributed to the modification. However, the stress corrosion cracking resistance decreased due to filiform corrosion induced by the Al8Mn5 phase.

Anisotropy investigation of an ECAP-processed Mg-Al-Ca-Mn alloy with synergistically enhanced mechanical properties and corrosion resistance

Chao Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the anisotropy of a 32-pass ECAP processed Mg-3.7Al-1.8Ca-0.4Mn alloy, which exhibited synergistically enhanced mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The ECAP alloy had homogeneous fine alpha-Mg grains and different distribution of refined Al2Ca particles. The refinement of microstructure resulted in the formation of a protective film on the ECAP alloy, leading to different corrosion mechanisms compared to the as-cast alloy. The distribution of Al2Ca and the texture of alpha-Mg were identified as the main factors affecting the anisotropic properties of the ECAP alloy.

Tailoring the microstructure and enhancing the corrosion resistance of extruded dilute Mg-0.6Al-0.5Mn-0.25Ca alloy by adding trace Ce

Mei-Xuan Li et al.

Summary: The effect of trace Ce addition on the microstructure evolution and corrosion behavior of dilute Mg-0.6Al-0.5Mn-0.25Ca alloys has been investigated. The addition of Ce resulted in the formation of less noble Al8Mn4Ce and Al11Ce3 phases. Notably, the alloy containing 0.3 wt% Ce exhibited the lowest corrosion rate, attributed to factors such as the low potential difference, compact composite oxide film, and enrichment of Fe.
