Modelling fracture process zone width and length for quasi-brittle fracture of rock, concrete and ceramics

Xiaozhi Hu et al.

Summary: This study provides a fresh perspective on quasi-brittle fracture phenomena by analyzing the width and length of the crack-tip fracture process zone (FPZ), and establishes a model containing these two parameters to analyze experimental data.

Flexural properties of fiber reinforced concrete containing silica fume and nano-silica

Amirhosein Abna et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of silica fume, nano-silica, and polypropylene fibers on the flexural properties of concrete. The results show that polypropylene fibers enhance the fracture energy and flexural strength of the specimens. The response surface method is used to establish the relationships between the parameters and the amounts of silica fume, nano-silica, and fibers, and the optimal mixture is determined to have 5% silica fume, 0.75% nano-silica, and 0.15% fibers. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images confirm that silica fume and nano-silica improve the homogeneity and density of the samples.

Comprehensive tests and quasi-brittle fracture modeling of light-weight foam concrete with expanded clay aggregates

Yao Lu et al.

Summary: This study introduces a model for quasi-brittle fracture of Expanded Clay Foam Concrete (eC-FC) and validates its effectiveness through comprehensive testing and analysis. The model successfully measures the tensile strength and fracture toughness of the material, with results confirming both the trans-granular fracture in eC-FC and inter-granular fracture in normal concrete. Through experiments, it was also shown that the tensile strength estimated from compressive tests aligns with that determined from three-point-bend tests.

Experimental investigation on fracture characteristics of plain and rubberized concrete containing hybrid steel-polypropylene fiber

Emad A. H. Alwesabi et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the impact of polypropylene (PP) fiber and steel fiber hybridization on the fracture characteristics of plain and rubberized concrete, finding that the mixture with hybrid 0.1% PP-0.9% steel fiber outperformed in fracture energy and compressive strength.

Finite element analysis and experimental validation of progressive collapse of reinforced rubberized concrete frame

Ibrahim M. H. Alshaikh et al.

Summary: This paper develops an FE model using ABAQUS software to simulate the progressive collapse phenomenon of reinforced rubberized concrete frames. The numerical model is validated by comparing FEM results with experimental test observations, and further extended to include more models for a better understanding of progressive collapse. The simulation model achieved good results compared to the experimental results, meeting the resistance requirements of progressive collapse.
