Versatile Chemical Recycling Strategies: Value-Added Chemicals from Polyester and Polycarbonate Waste

Jack M. Payne et al.

Summary: In this study, Zn-II complexes were used for the mild and selective chemical upcycling of commercial polyesters and polycarbonates, and the first example of discrete metal-mediated poly(bisphenol A carbonate) methanolysis at room temperature was reported. A completely circular upcycling approach to plastic waste was demonstrated by producing renewable poly(ester-amide)s from bottle-grade PET.

Aliphatic Polycarbonates from Cyclic Carbonate Monomers and Their Application as Biomaterials

Wei Yu et al.

Summary: Aliphatic polycarbonates are gaining attention as biomaterials due to their biocompatibility and tunable degradation, with the ability to introduce functional handles through careful design of cyclic carbonate monomers. These materials have been widely explored for a variety of biomedical applications, from drug delivery to tissue regeneration and vascular graft design, showing great potential for therapeutic use in vitro and in vivo.

Capturing ethylene glycol with dimethyl carbonate towards depolymerisation of polyethylene terephthalate at ambient temperature

Shinji Tanaka et al.

Summary: The depolymerisation of PET via alkali metal alkoxide catalysed methanolysis efficiently proceeds at ambient temperature by capturing ethylene glycol with dimethyl carbonate, which biases the equilibrium towards dimethyl terephthalate due to the thermal stability of ethylene carbonate.
