Xanthan Gum Hydrogels as High-Capacity Adsorbents for Dye Removal

Dennis Gitau Njuguna et al.

Summary: Xanthan gum-based hydrogels were synthesized as efficient adsorbents for dye pollutants removal from wastewaters. The adsorption mechanism was primarily attributed to electrostatic interactions and hydrogel swelling. The hydrogel exhibited a high theoretical q(max) towards Gentian Violet at pH 8 to 9 and could be regenerated with HCl for at least 4 cycles with over 99% dye removal efficiency.

Size-controlled lignin nanoparticles for tuning the mechanical properties of poly(vinyl alcohol)

Qingwen Cao et al.

Summary: In this study, size-controlled lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) were prepared with three narrow lignin fractions and added into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix, resulting in substantial improvements in the mechanical properties of PVA. The research findings will not only promote the development of advanced hydrogels, but also contribute to advancements in lignin chemistry and biorefinery technologies.

Sustainable Esterification of a Soda Lignin with Phloretic Acid

Antoine Adjaoud et al.

Summary: A sustainable chemical process was developed through the Fischer esterification of Protobind(R) lignin and phloretic acid. The main factor influencing the reaction yield was found to be the initial molar ratio between the two precursors. The esterified lignin showed high solubility in common organic solvents and improved thermal stability, indicating potential for composite and thermoset applications.

A well-defined lignin-based filler for tuning the mechanical properties of polymethyl methacrylate

Qingwen Cao et al.

Summary: Through structural analysis, it is found that the strength and toughness of lignin-filled polymer blends (PMMA/L-g-PMMA) can be effectively adjusted by regulating the molecular weights, types and contents of S/G units, and flexible/rigid linkages in lignin macromolecules. This study not only provides a simple and effective strategy to overcome the heterogeneity of lignin, but also paves the way for high-value utilization of lignin on a broader scale.

Novel composite hydrogels containing fractionated, purified lignins for aqueous-based separations

Nicholas Gregorich et al.

Summary: A series of novel lignin-based hydrogel composites were synthesized by incorporating ultraclean lignins into poly(vinyl alcohol), resulting in significant reduction in methylene blue permeability. The concentration and functionalization of lignins directly impact the network structure of the soft composites, with increased lignin concentration leading to a decrease in molecular weight between crosslinks.
