Amine and sulfonic acid functionalized mesoporous silica as an effective adsorbent for removal of methylene blue from contaminated water

Abeer Beagan et al.

Summary: The waste effluents of textiles and leather industries, which contain organic dyes as major contaminants, have been found to cause serious health problems. Adsorption techniques using mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were investigated for the efficient removal of organic dyes from industrial wastewater. The MSNs were synthesized with selectively generated active inner/external surfaces by incorporating functional groups through co-condensation and post-grafting procedures. The study evaluated different grafting strategies and their effectiveness in removing cationic dye (methylene blue) from contaminated water samples. The results showed that nanomaterials containing sulfonic acid exhibited the highest adsorption performance, with an extraction efficiency of 98%. Increasing the salt concentration in the water samples improved the adsorption efficiency of all the nanomaterials.

Series of bis-morpholinium-based organo-Vts for the removal of anionic dyes

Fan Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of organo-vermiculites functionalized by bis-morpholinium gemini surfactants for the treatment of dyeing wastewater. The results show successful loading of modifiers onto the vermiculite surface, enhancing its hydrophobicity. The organo-vermiculites exhibit higher adsorption capacities for methyl orange/acid green 25, and the adsorption processes are well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic, Freundlich, and Langmuir models. Hydrophobic interaction is identified as the main driving force for adsorption, with pi-pi stacking and electrostatic interaction playing supporting roles.
