The biosorption of Alizarin Red S by Spirulina platensis; process modelling, optimisation, kinetic and isotherm studies

Elaheh Nasoudari et al.

Summary: Spirulina platensis was used as a biosorbent to remove alizarin red S (ARS) dye. A statistical Box-Behnken approach was employed to determine the optimal conditions for dye removal. The results showed that the efficiency of ARS removal was influenced by the ARS concentration, pH, reaction time, and S. platensis dose. The Langmuir model and pseudo-first-order equation were found to be suitable for describing the adsorption isotherms and kinetics. The study concluded that S. platensis could be a viable option for future research due to its suitable adsorptive characteristics.

Microalgal mediated antibiotic co-metabolism: Kinetics, transformation products and pathways

Claude Kiki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interaction between Chlorella vulgaris microalgae and four antibiotics. The results showed that the mixture of antibiotics inhibited algal growth, but had higher removal efficiency compared to single antibiotics. The study also found that C. vulgaris has the potential to be used in antibiotic removal.

Adsorption of tetracycline antibiotics by nitrilotriacetic acid modified magnetic chitosan-based microspheres from aqueous solutions

Xiaohui Tang et al.

Summary: A novel magnetic adsorbent, nitrilotriacetic acid-modified magnetic chitosan microspheres (NDMCMs), was prepared for the removal of tetracycline antibiotics (TC) from wastewater. The adsorption capacity of NDMCMs was significantly influenced by solution pH and ion strength, with a higher adsorption capacity compared to MCMs. The adsorption mechanism involved various chemical interactions and followed a spontaneous, endothermic, and orderly process.

Summary: Antibiotics are commonly detected in aquatic environments and are difficult to remove in sewage treatment plants. Electrochemical technologies, particularly using boron doped diamond (BDD) and carbon felt (CF) as anode and cathode materials, have shown to be effective in degrading antibiotics. Increasing applied current density can improve degradation efficiency.
