Continuous Oxygen Vacancy Gradient in TiO2 Photoelectrodes by a Photoelectrochemical-Driven Self-Purification Process

Kwang Hee Kim et al.

Summary: Oxygen vacancies are important for enhancing catalytic performance, but achieving a gradient distribution of these vacancies remains challenging. This study proposes a photoelectrochemical-driven self-purification process to generate a gradient distribution of oxygen vacancies, allowing for efficient charge transport.

Interfacial defective Ti3+ on Ti/TiO2 as visible-light responsive sites with promoted charge transfer and photocatalytic performance

Yangfan Zhang et al.

Summary: Defect sites on oxide semiconductors play a crucial role in promoting photocatalytic performance and modulating the bandgap structure of photocatalysts. The role of interfacial coordinatively unsaturated defect sites between metal and oxide in photocatalysis is still under debate. Through experimental and computational investigations, it has been found that interfacial coordinatively unsaturated defect sites act as visible-light-responsive sites and facilitate charge migration and separation across the metal-oxide interface, resulting in enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Experimental and theoretical study of the synthesis of N-doped TiO2 by N ion implantation of TiO2 thin films

A. Panepinto et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the application of charge transport in DSSCs using N-doped TiO2 materials, with precise control of nitrogen chemistry achieved through a combination of Reactive Magnetron Sputtering and Ion Implantation. It was found that the sputtering of the ion implanted layer prevails at low accelerating voltages, while the ion implantation process dominates at high accelerating voltages. The study also demonstrated that the sputtering effect can be easily avoided for low dose conditions.

Unveiling Temperature-Mediated Dual-Band Edge in TiO2 Nanotubes with Enhanced Photocatalytic Effect

S. Bhowmick et al.

Summary: The appearance of a sharp dual-band edge in the UV-visible absorption spectrum of TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs) and its impact on the photodegradation of organic dyes are driven by the annealing temperature-dependent evolution of an anatase (A)/rutile (R) phase junction. Systematic analyses show a promotion of anatase-to-rutile phase transformation with higher crystallinity through an evolution of an intermediate mixed phase. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveals a transition from sub-stoichiometric to stoichiometric TNTs with increasing annealing temperature, and theoretical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) confirm the formation of a dual-band edge at the A/R phase junction in TNTs.
