Phytochemical Composition and Biological Activities of Scorzonera Species

Karolina Lendzion et al.

Summary: The genus Scorzonera consists of nearly 200 species naturally occurring in Europe, Asia, and northern parts of Africa, and has been used in folk medicine in Asia for centuries. Studies have identified various bioactive compounds in Scorzonera plants with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and hepatoprotective properties, and potential activity against bacteria and fungi. Despite mild cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines, Scorzonera species show promise for wound healing therapy and treatment of microbial infections in medical products.
