Distributed Electro-Mechanical Coupling Effects in a Dielectric Elastomer Membrane Array

J. Neu et al.

Summary: In this work, the spatial electro-mechanical interactions in a 1-by-3 array of silicone DEs are systematically characterized. The study shows strong electro-mechanical coupling effects among the different array elements, which depend on various parameters and provide essential information for array actuator design. The results also indicate the presence of coupling effects in the DE capacitive response, which can be utilized for advanced self-sensing strategies.

Summary: Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are soft actuators that can generate fast and reversible deformations for soft robots and haptic devices. However, the limited availability of high-voltage microelectronics has restricted the number of DEAs that can be incorporated into soft robots. This paper presents a new class of optically addressable DEAs that use photoconductivity to create optically switchable and stretchable electrical channels, enabling non-contact, optical control of local actuation.
