The effect of rainfall changes on economic production

Maximilian Kotz et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the relationship between economic output and rainfall in 1,554 regions worldwide over the past 40 years. The findings suggest that increases in the number of wet days and extreme daily rainfall have a negative impact on economic growth rates. High-income nations and the services and manufacturing sectors are most affected. The study highlights the importance of considering the distribution of rainfall at different timescales and sectors when assessing the economic consequences of anthropogenic climate change.

Projecting future changes in extreme climate for maize production in the North China Plain and the role of adjusting the sowing date

Dengpan Xiao et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the future changes in extreme climate events during the maize growth period in the North China Plain using climate model data. The results show an increasing trend in extreme high temperature indices, while extreme precipitation indices remain unchanged. Adjusting the sowing date can reduce the impact of extreme heat stress on maize production.

Simulation of Wheat Response to Future Climate Change Based on Coupled Model Inter-Comparison Project Phase 6 Multi-Model Ensemble Projections in the North China Plain

Huizi Bai et al.

Summary: Global climate change poses a serious threat to wheat production in the North China Plain. Extreme temperature events have significantly negative impacts on wheat yields, but increased rainfall and elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration can partly compensate for the losses. Heat stress risk around flowering remains unchanged in future climate scenarios, while frost risk in spring slightly increases. Selecting appropriate cultivars and adjusting sowing time can help mitigate the negative effects of extreme temperature on wheat yields.

How could observed sowing dates contribute to maize potential yield under climate change in Northeast China based on APSIM model

Guangxin Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found that in the Northeast China, there is a delaying trend in actual maize sowing dates, resulting in a shortened growing season and negatively impacting the potential yield. For each day of delay in sowing, the potential yield decreased by 0.6%. However, advancing sowing dates showed different effects on maize potential yield across different regions.

Designing wheat cultivar adaptation to future climate change across China by coupling biophysical modelling and machine learning

Fulu Tao et al.

Summary: This study developed hybrid assessment models by combining crop models and machine learning algorithms to evaluate the impact of climate change on wheat productivity in China. The results showed that wheat yield is projected to decrease due to climate change, but with the CO2 effect, it may increase. Factors such as solar radiation, precipitation, temperature, cultivar traits, and CO2 are critical for wheat productivity. The study suggests that a significant portion of wheat planting grids would require cultivar renewal before 2050 to adapt to climate change.

Summary: This study examines the climate suitability of maize in the North China Plain (NCP) and predicts its future changes based on climate models. The results show that climate suitability will decrease in the future, but suitable areas for maize cultivation will increase. Delaying sowing dates can improve the climate suitability of summer maize.

Impact of Participation in Groundwater Market on Farmland, Income, and Water Access: Evidence from Pakistan

Amar Razzaq et al.

Summary: Groundwater irrigation plays a critical role in the sustainability of arable farming in countries like Pakistan. However, the impact of groundwater markets on farmland utilization, cropping patterns, water access, and income remains largely unknown. This study shows that participation in water markets can lead to higher agricultural land utilization, improved equity in water access, and increased incomes for farmers.

Impacts of climate change on winter wheat and summer maize dual-cropping system in the North China Plain

Jiadi Li et al.

Summary: Climate change may have potential effects on crop growth in the dual-cropping system of the North China Plain, but the current impact of climate extremes on crop growth is limited. The insensitivity of crop growth to climate extremes may be attributed to widespread irrigation, improved cultivars, and agricultural management. Mean climate conditions have a greater influence on crop growth changes than climate extremes.
