Pervasive fungicide resistance in Botrytis from strawberry in Norway: Identification of the grey mould pathogen and mutations

Katherine A. G. Nielsen et al.

Summary: Grey mould caused by Botrytis spp. is a major challenge in strawberry production in Norway. High resistance to multiple fungicides was found in isolates from perennial strawberry fields, with various resistance-conferring mutations detected in different isolates. The presence of fungicide resistance highlights the importance of considering additional factors besides resistance for effective grey mould management.

Weather Conditions, Orchard Age and Nitrogen Fertilization Influences Yield and Quality of 'Lutowka' Sour Cherry Fruit

Krzysztof Rutkowski et al.

Summary: Nitrogen fertilization has a certain impact on the quality and yield of sour cherries, but the effect on yield is not significant. Increasing the amount of nitrogen fertilizer reduces fruit weight, extract content, acidity and TSS/TA ratio, while increasing the brightness and redness of the fruit surface color. Temperature and precipitation have the greatest influence on the process of flowering, fruiting and fruit ripening.

The Effect of Harvest Date and Storage Conditions on the Quality of Remontant Strawberry Cultivars Grown in a Gutter System under Covers

Jan Blaszczyk et al.

Summary: The storage characteristics of three remontant strawberry cultivars were studied, and it was found that controlled atmosphere conditions provided the best storage effect, followed by modified atmosphere packaging conditions. Conventional air storage proved to have lower quality results. The quality of strawberries also varied depending on the date of fruit harvest.

The use of pesticides in Polish agriculture after integrated pest management (IPM) implementation

Arkadiusz Piwowar

Summary: The study characterized the attitudes and practices of Polish farmers in chemical plant protection treatments, finding strong relationships between farm size and the direction of changes in pesticide consumption. Reduction of pesticide usage mainly occurred on small farms, while there were no significant changes in pesticide use in large-scale field crops in Poland.

Fungicide Sensitivity in Strawberry Powdery Mildew Caused by Podosphaera aphanis in California

Michael G. Palmer et al.

Summary: Field observations indicate reduced fungicide sensitivity in field populations of Podosphaera aphanis, the causal agent of strawberry powdery mildew (SPM). This study characterizes the sensitivity of 19 P. aphanis isolates to common fungicides used against SPM in California, revealing resistance to most fungicides and the first ever reported resistance to penthiopyrad and quinoxyfen worldwide in P. aphanis.

A Weather-Driven Model for Predicting Infections of Grapevines by Sporangia of Plasmopara viticola

Chiara Brischetto et al.

Summary: A mechanistic model was developed to predict secondary infections of Plasmopara viticola and their severity by incorporating various environmental conditions. The model accurately identified periods with no sporangia or high risk sporangia peaks, helping growers to make informed decisions on fungicide sprays. Additionally, the model effectively reduced the need for fungicide application by moving from calendar-based to risk-based schedules for controlling P. viticola in vineyards.
