Exploring the potentials of underutilized grain amaranth (Amaranthusspp.) along the value chain for food and nutrition security: A review

O. R. Aderibigbe et al.

Summary: The burden of malnutrition in Africa calls for the exploration of underutilized species with high nutrients. African indigenous underutilized vegetables can play a significant role in food security. Grain amaranth has the potential to meet nutrition needs, but it is yet to be fully utilized.

Phenotypic diversity of Amaranthus quitensis Kunth landraces: A millenary crop of Ecuadorian Andean region

Hipatia Delgado et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the phenotypic diversity of black amaranth in the Ecuadorian highlands and found that quantitative traits displayed high levels of variation while qualitative traits showed less diversity. However, significant differences were observed in plant pigmentation and inflorescence characteristics among accessions from different provinces. The farmers were found to be effectively conserving the ataco germplasm. The agro-morphological information obtained in this study can be used for future amaranth breeding programs and managing the black amaranth collection.

Summary: This study evaluated the genetic diversity in a collection of cultivated and wild species of Amaranthus using SNP markers, revealing high variability with an average polymorphism information content of 0.365. Population structure analysis identified two sub populations, and phylogeny demonstrated the relationships among the different species.
