Blood Lead Levels in US Children Ages 1-11 Years, 1976-2016

Kathryn B. Egan et al.

Summary: Blood lead levels in U.S. children ages 1-11 y have substantially decreased over the past 40 years, but approximately 385,775 children still had BLLs greater than or equal to the CDC blood lead reference value of 5 μg/dL in the most recent period (2011-2016). Higher blood lead levels are consistently associated with risk factors such as non-Hispanic Black race/ethnicity, lower family income-to-poverty-ratio, and older housing age.

Summary: This study aimed to determine if any cultural adaptations of the BSID-III-NL were needed for Surinamese infants and evaluate its psychometric properties. The results showed that the BSID-III-NL was valid and reliable in assessing neurodevelopment of infants in Suriname.

Influence of perceived stress on prenatal depression in Surinamese women enrolled in the CCREOH study

Anisma R. Gokoel et al.

Summary: High levels of perceived stress and low individual resilience, along with lower education and older maternal age, were significantly associated with probable depression during pregnancy in Suriname. Early detection and management of stress and depression during pregnancy are crucial to minimize adverse health effects on the mother and child. Health education programs targeting stress reduction may help reduce the risk of depression during pregnancy.
