Implementation of Pediatric Flexible-Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing: A Systematic Review and Recommendations for Future Research

Summary: Although pediatric flexible-endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) has become a standard in dysphagia diagnostics, there is currently a lack of valid protocols and procedures for children. This systematic review identified 22 studies reporting on FEES protocols for children aged 0-18 years, but none of the studies demonstrated good methodological quality. The review provides a systematic basis for future research in pediatric FEES and proposes a minimum requirement for FEES protocols in scientific studies.

Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing in Breastfeeding Infants With Laryngomalacia: Observed Clinical and Endoscopic Changes With Alteration of Infant Positioning at the Breast

Summary: This study found that infants with laryngomalacia showed signs of dynamic airway obstruction and compromised airway protection when in the initial supine or semi lateral decubitus position. Repositioning these infants to semi-prone improved symptoms and swallowing function. Therefore, altering the breastfeeding position to semi-prone may improve dynamic airway obstruction and reduce aspiration risk in infants with laryngomalacia.
