Phytochemical Profile and Anticancer Potential of Endophytic Microorganisms from Liverwort Species, Marchantia polymorpha L.

Mateusz Stelmasiewicz et al.

Summary: Liverwort endophytes, particularly those from spore-forming plants, could be a valuable source of new biologically active substances not found in other organisms. In this study, volatile compounds obtained from Marchantia polymorpha L. liverwort and its endophytes were analyzed. Diketopiperazine compounds were identified in the endophyte extract, while the liverwort volatile extract contained sesquiterpenoids of cuparane, chamigrane, acorane, and thujopsane types. The ethyl acetate extracts from the endophytic microorganisms showed significant anticancer potential against hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma and cervical adenocarcinoma.

Taxonomic and Metabolite Diversities of Moss-Associated Actinobacteria from Thailand

Chadabhorn Insuk et al.

Summary: This study isolated actinobacteria from moss and moss-associated rhizosphere soils in Thailand and analyzed their taxonomic and metabolic diversities. The actinobacteria showed abilities to produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), siderophores, and solubilize tricalcium phosphate. The 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed diverse phylogenetic distributions among seven genera, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses identified various antimicrobial metabolites. Overall, the actinobacteria from mosses in Thailand demonstrated taxonomic diversity and the potential to produce metabolites with plant-growth-promoting and microbial pathogen-inhibiting properties.

Dominance of coniferous and broadleaved trees drives bacterial associations with boreal feather mosses

Juanita C. Rodriguez-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The composition of moss-associated bacterial communities is mainly influenced by host species and environmental conditions related to tree dominance. The overall composition of moss phyllosphere is determined by the interaction of both factors, with forest type having a strong influence on the bacterial phyla. Bacterial diversity is higher in spruce forests, while turnover and gamma-diversity are higher in aspen forests. Cyanobacteria, particularly the family Nostocaceae, are more abundant in aspen forests compared to spruce forests.

Unraveling global and diazotrophic bacteriomes of boreal forest floor feather mosses and their environmental drivers at the ecosystem and at the plant scale in North America

Marie Renaudin et al.

Summary: Feather mosses are important for the growth and decomposition of moss, as well as the carbon and nitrogen cycles in the boreal forest. Climate and nutrients play a significant role in shaping the feather moss bacteriome.

Bog ecosystems as a playground for plant-microbe coevolution: bryophytes and vascular plants harbour functionally adapted bacteria

Wisnu Adi Wicaksono et al.

Summary: The study found that microbial communities in bogs are functionally adapted to their plant hosts, with higher colonization specificity for vascular plants and higher bacterial richness and diversity for commonly found Sphagnum mosses. Each plant group showed enrichment of distinct phylogenetic and functional bacterial lineages. The metabolic potential of metagenome-assembled genomes supported the functional specification of prevalent bacteria, some of which harbored pathogenicity potential and virulence factors similar to human pathogens, highlighting the role of natural plant microbiota as a potential reservoir for human pathogens and the importance of plant-microbe interactions in bog ecosystems.
