Characteristics of Secondary PM2.5 Under Different Photochemical Reactivity Backgrounds in the Pearl River Delta Region

Xinyang Yu et al.

Summary: With the control of air pollution in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, the levels of atmospheric particulates are decreasing. However, ozone pollution has become a serious issue, along with secondary aerosol pollution caused by photochemical reactions. The study found that photochemical reactivities were more significant in the central and western areas of the PRD and in inland areas compared to the eastern and coastal areas. The highest concentrations of secondary PM2.5 (PM2.5-sec) were observed in autumn, with the southern areas showing the highest levels. The concentration of PM2.5-sec increased significantly with enhanced photochemical reactivity, particularly in coastal areas. Both PM2.5-sec and ozone concentrations showed a single peak variation, with higher levels during the daytime and a peak at around 15:00. Polluted stations had higher average maximum concentrations for each pollutant, indicating that atmospheric oxidation background favored the formation of PM2.5-sec.

A study on the dynamic spatial spillover effect of urban form on PM2.5 concentration at county scale in China

Xianglai Mao et al.

Summary: The study found a significant relationship between urban form and PM2.5 concentration, and different development strategies should be formulated to reduce PM2.5 concentration for different urban agglomerations. Additionally, spatial autocorrelation and time lag effect exacerbate PM2.5 pollution in China, highlighting the need for enhanced regional joint treatment and long-term control.

Summary: This study evaluated the pollution characteristics of PM2.5 and the formation of secondary aerosols under different photochemical activity levels. The results showed that higher photochemical activity levels were associated with higher mass concentrations of PM2.5, and secondary aerosols significantly contributed to the increase in PM2.5.

Co-occurrence of ozone and PM2.5 pollution in the Yangtze River Delta over 2013-2019: Spatiotemporal distribution and meteorological conditions

Huibin Dai et al.

Summary: The study investigated the spatial-temporal variations of surface-layer ozone and PM2.5 in the Yangtze River Delta region from 2013 to 2019. It found that while the MDA8 O3 concentrations increased during this period, PM2.5 concentrations decreased. The analysis also showed a small positive correlation between MDA8 O3 and PM2.5 during warm months, with an increased correlation coefficient when long term trends were removed. Co-pollution days of MDA8 O3 and PM2.5 were frequent, particularly in April, May, June, and October. The occurrence of co-pollution in the YRD was mainly influenced by relative humidity, surface air temperature, and wind speed.

Summary: The study revealed a decreasing trend in the frequency of double high pollution (DHP) in the Yangtze River Delta region from 2015 to 2019, with DHP mainly occurring in spring and autumn, higher levels of MDA8 O-3 during DHP compared to high O-3 pollution (HOP), and higher PM2.5 levels during high PM2.5 pollution (HPP). DHP events were associated with weak pressure fields and moderate temperature and humidity conditions.

Double High-Level Ozone and PM2.5 Co-Pollution Episodes in Shanghai, China: Pollution Characteristics and Significant Role of Daytime HONO

Kejing Yang et al.

Summary: The study revealed simultaneous occurrences of high fine particulate (PM2.5) pollution and high ozone (O-3) pollution in urban Shanghai, where active photochemical processes during double high pollution episodes played a crucial role in the production and accumulation of O-3. Additionally, a strong negative correlation between daytime HONO concentration and O-3 concentration in most double high pollution episodes indicated the dominant role of HONO in O-3 formation during these pollution incidents.
