The formation and evolution of secondary organic aerosol during summer in Xi'an: Aqueous phase processing in fog-rain days

Summary: This study investigated the formation and evolution of SOA in summer in Xi'an, revealing that photochemical oxidation processes played a dominant role in SOA formation, generating both LO-OOA and MO-OOA during both fog-rain days and non-fog-rain days. A significant increase in aq-OOA was observed during fog-rain days, driven by high RH and ALWC, with air masses from east and southeast favoring the formation of long-time fog-rain days during summer in Xi'an.

Ubiquitous atmospheric production of organic acids mediated by cloud droplets

Summary: The oxidation of hydrated formaldehyde in cloud droplets is the dominant source of atmospheric formic acid, increasing atmospheric acidity. Through a multiphase pathway, formaldehyde can efficiently convert to gaseous formic acid, producing up to four times more formic acid than all other known chemical sources combined.
