Exploring the role of economic and institutional indicators for carbon and GHG emissions: policy-based analysis for OECD countries

Muhammad Adnan Bashir et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of economic and environmental indicators on carbon and greenhouse gas emissions in 29 OECD countries from 1990 to 2018. The findings suggest that export diversification has a negative effect on carbon emissions but promotes greenhouse gas emissions. Institutional quality, economic growth, financial development contribute to reducing carbon emissions but increasing greenhouse gas emissions. In contrast, trade openness has a positive influence on carbon emissions but a negative influence on greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, urbanization is identified as one of the major factors contributing to environmental degradation.

Trade openness and urbanization impact on renewable and non-renewable energy consumption in China

Jiabin Han et al.

Summary: China's significant growth in trade and urbanization has raised concerns about the proportion of renewable and non-renewable energy consumption. The study finds that trade increases non-renewable energy consumption, while urbanization has a limited effect on energy consumption. The government is recommended to implement regulations to reduce non-renewable energy consumption, promote the use of renewable energy, and restrict rural to urban migration.

The development of highway infrastructure and CO2 emissions: The mediating role of agglomeration

Haicheng Xu et al.

Summary: The development of China's highway infrastructure has contributed to the increase in CO2 emissions, but the relationship between highway infrastructure and CO2 emissions follows an inverted U-shaped pattern. The impact of highway infrastructure on CO2 emissions differs between local and peripheral cities, with agglomeration and spatial spillover effects playing different roles. Strategies for emission reduction should consider the environmental effects of agglomeration and the characteristics of regional development.

Xiaochun Zhao et al.

Summary: Analyzing the relationship between economic development and carbon emissions, this study finds that carbon emissions are positively correlated with economic development in China, but they are generally in a weak decoupling state. There are regional differences in decoupling, indicating imbalanced development. Population size and economic intensity have a restraining effect on decoupling, while energy intensity and carbon intensity have a positive impact.

Comparative Analysis of Trade Liberalization, CO2 Emissions, Energy Consumption and Economic Growth in Southeast Asian and Latin American Regions: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach

Muhammad Zeeshan et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between trade liberalization, CO2 emissions, energy consumption, and economic growth in Southeast Asian and Latin American countries. The findings show that trade has a positive and significant effect on energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and GDP in Southeast Asian countries. While in Latin American countries, trade has a positive but insignificant impact on energy consumption, but a positive and significant impact on both CO2 emissions and GDP. Energy consumption predicts a positive and significant effect on CO2 emissions and a positive but insignificant effect on GDP in Southeast Asia. However, in Latin American countries, energy consumption has a positive and significant impact on both CO2 emissions and GDP. Additionally, CO2 emissions have a positive significant effect on GDP in both regions. Therefore, governments in both areas should implement appropriate policies to promote green technologies in production and exports, leading to a cleaner environment and sustainable long-term development.

Summary: The study found that from 2005 to 2015, only 11% of Chinese cities achieved strong decoupling of economic growth and emissions, while 65.6% showed weak decoupling, and 23.4% showed no decoupling. The level of economic-emission decoupling in cities is related to factors such as economic structure, emission intensity, and population size. Improving production and carbon efficiency is crucial for reducing emission intensity.
