Flow, force, behaviour: assessment of a prototype hydraulic barrier for invasive fish

Joschka Wiegleb et al.

Summary: Migration barriers in a vertical slot fish pass can selectively prevent the ascension of invasive species while allowing native species to pass through. Testing a prototype protective barrier in the fish pass showed that different fish species experienced varied forces and had distinct swimming trajectories, which could be used to predict the species with high accuracy. This research opens up new possibilities for using hydraulic constructions for species conservation.

Effects of physical parameters on fish migration between a reservoir and its tributaries

Nikola Pfauserova et al.

Summary: Reservoirs disrupt riverine continuity, impacting biodiversity and facilitating the spread of non-native fish species. This study found that increasing day length was the most common predictor of fish migration to tributaries. Different fish species also responded differently to changes in water level and temperature.

Invasive gibel carp (Carassius gibelio) outperforms threatened native crucian carp (Carassius carassius) in growth rate and effectiveness of resource use: Field and experimental evidence

Sandip Tapkir et al.

Summary: Invasive alien species, such as the Carassius gibelio, pose a serious threat to the native biodiversity, particularly the native crucian carp (Carassius carassius) in European waters. This study identified resource competition as a possible ecological mechanism for the rapid decline of the crucian carp, with the invasive species demonstrating better food utilization and competitive abilities. The research combined field studies and controlled experiments to compare the growth patterns and food utilization between the two species, providing novel support for the hypothesis that the decline of the crucian carp is caused by the introduction and spread of the Carassius gibelio.

Fish assemblage distribution along free-flowing rivers entering a reservoir cascade

Andressa Mendes Silva-Sene et al.

Summary: The study found that reservoir cascades have cumulative effects on fish assemblages, but these effects may be less pronounced when there are incoming free-flowing tributaries. The transitional areas between the rivers and the first reservoir were found to have the highest fish richness. Variables related to discharge and position along the gradient were identified as the main drivers of variation in fish assemblage structure.

Niche expansion by indigenous fish species following the introduction of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in a subtropical river system, upper Blyde River, South Africa

Lerato T. Maimela et al.

Summary: The introduction of alien predatory fish, such as rainbow trout, can significantly impact indigenous fish communities by altering food web dynamics. This study in South Africa found that rainbow trout mainly compete with indigenous fish for resources rather than preying on them. The invasion of rainbow trout led to a decrease in indigenous fish abundance and disrupted the trophic relationships among fish species.

River Connectivity is Crucial for Safeguarding Biodiversity but May be Socially Overlooked. Insights From Spanish University Students

Elena Arboleya et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of river connectivity in the conservation of freshwater ecosystems, and reveals differences in the value placed on this feature by students from different academic backgrounds. While educational sciences students show a higher willingness to pay for river conservation, engineering students prioritize river connectivity less compared to other river features.

Spatial distribution of native fish species in tributaries is altered by the dispersal of non-native species from reservoirs

Nikola Pfauserova et al.

Summary: The study found that non-native species in the reservoir spread massively to the upstream main tributary, the Vltava River, in spring and returned to the reservoir for wintering. Meanwhile, native Salmo trutta showed a specific shift from the Vltava River to smaller streams during summer.

The giants' feast: predation of the large introduced European catfish on spawning migrating allis shads

Stephanie Bouletreau et al.

Summary: European catfish predation on anadromous prey such as allis shad has been found to be a significant factor in the mortality of the shad population. Through auditory and video surveys, it was discovered that shad made up a large proportion of the catfish's diet, highlighting the potential impact of the catfish's expanding range on the conservation of anadromous species in Europe.

Climbing up the ladder: male reproductive behaviour changes with age in a long-lived fish

Marek Smejkal et al.

Summary: In this study, we tracked a cyprinid fish species over a 5-year period and found that reproductive performance improved with age, indicating the potential impact of individual age on reproductive success. Larger fish at tagging arrived earlier at spawning grounds in subsequent years, suggesting that size may influence reproductive performance.

Effects of hydropeaking on the attached eggs of a rheophilic cyprinid species

Daniel Barton et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of hydropeaking on the spawning ground of rheophilic fish, the asp. It was found that sudden increases in water velocity caused by hydropeaking events can negatively affect the adhesive eggs of the fish, potentially leading to their disappearance. Recommendations were made to avoid hydropeaking or keep water velocity below critical values to manage spawning grounds for rheophilous fish.

Wasted effort or promising approach-Does it make sense to build an engineered spawning ground for rheophilic fish in reservoir cascades?

Josef Knott et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic alterations, such as dam construction, have led to a loss of habitat for riverine fish species. Restoration efforts, such as creating engineered spawning grounds, have shown potential for fish conservation, but successful reproduction on these grounds may not guarantee further population development.

A seasonal electric barrier blocks invasive adult sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) and reduces production of larvae

Nicholas S. Johnson et al.

Summary: A study tested a seasonal and non-physical barrier using pulsed direct electrical current to block adult sea lamprey and monitored the movement and mortality of non-target fish species. The results showed that the electric barrier effectively blocked adult sea lamprey, reduced the abundance of larval sea lamprey upstream, but raised concerns about the effects on the movements and survival of other fish species.

The Use of Barriers to Limit the Spread of Aquatic Invasive Animal Species: A Global Review

Peter E. Jones et al.

Summary: Aquatic invasive species pose a significant threat to freshwater biodiversity, leading to the increased use of exclusion barriers as a management strategy. However, the effectiveness of these barriers is context dependent and can impact native organisms. Global studies show that barriers have been successful in limiting the passage of AIS, but more research is needed to understand their long-term impacts on native species and to improve their effectiveness as a management tool.

Land cover alteration shifts ecological assembly processes in floodplain lakes: Consequences for fish community dynamics

Bin Li et al.

Summary: Habitat degradation is expected to alter community structure and ecosystem functions, affecting biodiversity. Positive species covariance and community stability were found to be impacted by nutrient levels and habitat types. Ecological stochasticity was higher in natural sites compared to modified habitats, suggesting deterministic processes could control community composition.
