Improvement of field fluorometry estimates of chlorophyll a concentration in a cyanobacteria-rich eutrophic lake

Amir M. Chegoonian et al.

Summary: This study compares the accuracy and reliability of instrumented buoys and spectrophotometry in measuring chlorophyll a concentration for water quality monitoring. The results show that the model based on phycocyanin fluorescence is the most accurate, while the model using environmental factors is the most reliable. The newly developed models significantly improve the performance of estimating chlorophyll a content in water bodies using remotely sensed imagery.

Open and Cost-Effective Digital Ecosystem for Lake Water Quality Monitoring

Daniele Strigaro et al.

Summary: In certain sectors of water resources management, the progress of the digital revolution is hindered by factors such as costs, lack of digital expertise, and resistance to change. This project aims to examine the feasibility of using an open, cost-effective, and replicable digital ecosystem for lake monitoring to address the issue of incomplete integration of information. By utilizing cloud-based technology and an Automatic High-Frequency Monitoring System (AHFM) built with open hardware and software components, the system will be tested and validated in a real-life scenario, integrating historical databases and evaluating the performance of the AHFM system.

Temporal changes in nutrients in a deep oligomictic lake: the role of external loads versus climate change

Michela Rogora et al.

Summary: Climate change affects stratification and mixing patterns in deep lakes, impacting nutrient availability and plankton dynamics. A study on Lake Maggiore in Italy showed that nutrient concentrations have increased since 2010, shifting the lake towards mesotrophy. This change is attributed to climate-related variations in stratification, mixing patterns and in nutrient retention.

Meteo-Hydrological Sensors within the Lake Maggiore Catchment: System Establishment, Functioning and Data Validation

Marzia Ciampittiello et al.

Summary: Climate change and human activities have significant impacts on lakes and their catchments, requiring a well-distributed and high frequency network to monitor environmental variables and share data efficiently. The PITAGORA project developed low-cost, easily implementable, and reliable instruments for measuring various environmental parameters, adaptable to different monitoring purposes.

Costs and benefits of automated high-frequency environmental monitoring-The case of lake water management

Isabel Seifert-Dahnn et al.

Summary: Freshwater lakes are dynamic ecosystems that provide multiple ecosystem services to humans, but sudden changes in environmental conditions can have negative impacts. Automated high frequency monitoring systems can help detect extreme events and enable early mitigation actions. A cost-benefit analysis showed that AHFM can prevent human health impacts and reputational damages, but the financial viability depends on the frequency and severity of environmental changes and the number of lake users.

Transparent exopolymer particles (TEP), phytoplankton and picocyanobacteria along a littoral-to-pelagic depth-gradient in a large subalpine lake

Cristiana Callieri et al.

Summary: Transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) play a crucial role in the organic carbon cycle of aquatic systems, with their production and distribution showing vertical heterogeneity but mostly even horizontal distribution. In Lake Maggiore, TEP accounts for a significant portion of total organic carbon (TOC) and is correlated with chlorophyll concentrations.
