Impact of the COVID-19 on the vertical distributions of major pollutants from a tower in the Pearl River Delta

Lei Li et al.

Summary: The outbreak of the 2019 novel coronavirus had a significant impact on human health and socioeconomics worldwide. The lockdown measures implemented in China resulted in a reduction in human activities and associated emissions, providing an opportunity to study the relationship between anthropogenic emissions and air quality. The study found that during the lockdown, concentrations of nitric oxide, fine particulate matter, and ozone significantly declined, suggesting that significant reductions in anthropogenic emissions can mitigate PM2.5 and O-3 levels simultaneously.

Why has the trend in humidity variation in Shenzhen changed from decrease to increase while urbanisation has continued?

Li Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analysed the variations of relative humidity in Shenzhen, China over the past 60 years. The results showed three stages of mean annual relative humidity: stable, decreasing, and increasing. The increase in humidity after 2008 was attributed to the city government's policies aimed at improving the ecological environment.

Effects of Horizontal Transport and Vertical Mixing on Nocturnal Ozone Pollution in the Pearl River Delta

Honglong Yang et al.

Summary: Based on the observation data of 2020, this study evaluated the daily variation in O-3 in Shenzhen and focused on the characteristics of nocturnal ozone pollution. The findings revealed frequent nocturnal peaks in winter and spring, and a close association between nocturnal O-3 pollution and horizontal transport and vertical mixing.

Review of advances in urban climate study in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, China

Lei Li et al.

Summary: The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has undergone rapid urbanization in the past four decades and is rich in meteorological observation resources, making it an ideal location for urban climate studies. Research in the region has focused on urban climate characteristics and variations, challenges brought by urban climate change, and technologies and strategies to mitigate and adapt to these changes.

Role of Heat Wave-Induced Biogenic VOC Enhancements in Persistent Ozone Episodes Formation in Pearl River Delta

Haolin Wang et al.

Summary: Regional ozone pollution is influenced by a combination of anthropogenic sources and biogenic volatile organic compounds emitted from vegetation. This study found that during a heat wave in the Pearl River Delta, BVOC contributed significantly to ground-level ozone formation, with intense photochemical reactions leading to severe ozone pollution. The results suggest the importance of considering BVOC emissions in urban greening strategies to mitigate ozone pollution.

Retrieval of Boundary Layer Height and Its Influence on PM2.5 Concentration Based on Lidar Observation over Guangzhou

Song Lang et al.

Summary: Wavelet analysis was applied to lidar observations to retrieve planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) over Guangzhou. Results show that PBLH is significantly lower in the dry season than in the wet season, with a significant negative correlation between PBLH and PM2.5 concentration.
