Plant communities and potential native phytoremediator species in petroleum hydrocarbon-polluted desert systems

Sarah Al-Ateeqi et al.

Summary: This study reports the recovery of desert plant communities in Kuwait after 20 years of oil pollution, and suggests that certain native plant species can tolerate and potentially remediate oil-polluted soil. The findings highlight the importance of these plant communities in improving soil quality and biodiversity.

Comparative remediation rate of biostimulation, bioaugmentation, and phytoremediation in hydrocarbon contaminants

S. M. Dehnavi et al.

Summary: This article discusses the application of bioremediation technologies in the treatment of environmental pollution caused by crude oil spillage. By comparing the degradation effects of different technologies, it is found that immobilization technology has the highest degradation rate, but it also has high costs. On the other hand, phytoremediation technology has the lowest degradation rate, which can be accelerated by microorganism inoculation. Adding waste materials to adjust the ratio of soil nutrients is also an effective and cost-efficient method for hydrocarbon degradation.

Nature-Based Solutions for Restoring an Agricultural Area Contaminated by an Oil Spill

Elisabetta Franchi et al.

Summary: This study presents a feasibility study for using bioremediation and phytoremediation to restore agricultural activity in a field contaminated by a diesel oil spill. The results show that the presence of plants can enhance the degradation of hydrocarbons in the soil, and the addition of plant growth-promoting bacteria further promotes plant growth. Metagenomic analysis also provides insights into the evolution of microbial communities during the experiment.

Effects of nitrogen fertilization on the rhizosphere priming

Zhenhui Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that nitrogen input affects the rhizosphere priming effect, with high nitrogen competition leading to microbial C:N imbalance, which affects enzyme activities and microbial metabolic efficiency, thereby influencing the competition between plants and microbes.

Soil microbial community and association network shift induced by several tall fescue cultivars during the phytoremediation of a petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil

Jinyu Hou et al.

Summary: The study assessed the removal efficiency of soil total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) by ten different cultivars of tall fescue grass and their associated rhizosphere microbiomes. Results showed varying TPH removal efficiencies among different cultivars, with differences in the composition of rhizosphere bacterial and fungal communities especially prominent in the early stages of remediation. The presence of tall fescue enriched putative petroleum-degrading bacterial and fungal guilds, with higher TPH removal efficiency associated with increased abundances of certain genes and microbial networks.

Study of Oil-Contaminated Soils Phytotoxicity During Bioremediation Activities

Yuriy Sivkov et al.

Summary: This study focused on the dynamics of phytotoxicity changes in oil-contaminated meadow soils during microbial bioremediation. The research, conducted in laboratory and field conditions, found that the content of petroleum products significantly influenced the germination rate of ryegrass seeds. Additionally, the use of potassium humate and modified vermiculite as additives showed significant reductions in soil toxicity.
