Lower Levels of Directed Exploration and Reflective Thinking Are Associated With Greater Anxiety and Depression

Ryan Smith et al.

Summary: Anxiety and depression are often accompanied by strong beliefs that entering certain situations will result in adverse outcomes, even when these situations are objectively safe. This maladaptive avoidance behavior may be due to a failure to reflect on the appropriate level of uncertainty and the potential reduction of uncertainty through exploration.

(S)-5-Methylmellein Isolated from an Endogenous Lichen Fungus Rosellinia corticium as a Potent Inhibitor of Human Monoamine Oxidase A

Geum-Seok Jeong et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the inhibitory activities of lichen fungi against human monoamine oxidases (hMAOs). A compound called (S)-5-methylmellein (5MM) was isolated from an extract and exhibited strong inhibitory activity against hMAO-A. It also showed moderate inhibitory activity against acetylcholinesterase. Molecular docking analysis indicated that 5MM had higher binding affinity for hMAO-A compared to hMAO-B. In silico pharmacokinetic analysis suggests that 5MM has good absorption and permeability properties. These findings suggest that 5MM may be a potential candidate for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders.

A Comparative Study of Isolated Secondary Metabolites from Lichens and Their Antioxidative Properties

Jan Elecko et al.

Summary: Free radicals are crucial in cellular chemical processes, but many synthetic antioxidants are known to be carcinogenic. Natural antioxidants without side effects are being sought, and lichens containing phenolic compounds may be suitable candidates. This study aims to compare the activity of metabolites involved in radical scavenging using micromolar concentration calculations.

Atranorin, an antimicrobial metabolite from lichen Parmotrema rampoddense exhibited in vitro anti-breast cancer activity through interaction with Akt activity

Adhikesavan Harikrishnan et al.

Summary: In this study, Atranorin showed selective cytotoxicity against MDA MB-231 and MCF-7 breast cancer cells through its interactions with Akt and Bax proteins, and downregulation of anti-apoptotic Akt levels. These findings suggest Atranorin as a potential natural molecule for targeted therapy in breast cancer.

Global prevalence and burden of depressive and anxiety disorders in 204 countries and territories in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic

Damian F. Santomauro et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence and burden of major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders globally in 2020. The findings showed that the pandemic led to increased prevalence of major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders, with females and younger age groups being more affected. The pandemic has created an increased urgency to strengthen mental health systems in most countries and mitigation strategies are needed to address the burden of these mental disorders.
