What about the fellow eye in treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration? Analysis of data from the Swedish macula register

Monica Lovestam Adrian et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the development of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) in the fellow eye of patients initially presenting with unilateral nAMD, using data from the Swedish Macula Register. The results showed that a proportion of patients required bilateral treatment, with treatment of the fellow eye starting within approximately 2 years of the first eye's treatment. Best-corrected visual acuity in the second eye at the start of treatment was generally higher than that of the first eye.

Correlation of Change in Central Subfield Thickness and Change in Visual Acuity in Neovascular AMD: Post Hoc Analysis of VIEW 1 and 2

Onnisa Nanegrungsunk et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the correlation between changes in central subfield thickness (CST) and changes in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration. The results showed weak or no correlation between CST and BCVA, regardless of the type of drug or treatment regimen. This suggests that changes in CST should not be used as a surrogate marker for visual acuity outcomes in this condition.

Modeling the impact of COVID-19 on Retina Clinic Performance

Karan Sethi et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of COVID-19 measures on retina clinic performance and patient satisfaction, finding that clinic volume declined by 62% during the pandemic period. Patient satisfaction with access nearly doubled, while satisfaction with overall care and safety remained high. Modeling showed that clinic changes optimized throughput and helped plan for future volume increases.

Characterizing Progression to Neovascular AMD in Fellow Eyes of Patients Treated With Intravitreal Anti-VEGF Injections

Matthew R. Starr et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the incidence of conversion to bilateral neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) following treatment of nAMD in the initial eye, revealing that fellow eyes had better vision at conversion and 1 year following conversion. Regular monitoring of fellow eyes is recommended to detect signs of neovascularization.

The COVID-19 Pandemic Has Had Negative Effects on Baseline Clinical Presentation and Outcomes of Patients with Newly Diagnosed Treatment-Naive Exudative AMD

Summary: The study revealed that patients with newly diagnosed treatment-naive exudative neovascular AMD referred during the COVID-19 pandemic had worse clinical characteristics at presentation and short-term visual outcomes.

Diagnostic Accuracy of Monitoring Tests of Fellow Eyes in Patients with Unilateral Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration Early Detection of Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration Study

Sobha Sivaprasad et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of routinely used tests of visual function and retinal morphology with FFA for detecting active macular neovascularization in patients with unilateral nAMD. Results showed that methods like self-reported vision changes, Amsler testing, visual acuity measurements, and fundus checks performed poorly in diagnosing active nAMD, while OCT demonstrated higher sensitivity and specificity.

Morphologic Predictors and Temporal Characteristics of Conversion from Nonexudative to Exudative Age-Related Macular Degeneration in the Fellow Eye

Kelvin Yi Chong Teo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association of systemic and ocular characteristics with nonexudative neovascularization (NV) in fellow eyes of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), and identified that hyperlipidemia, triglycerides, and baseline lesion size were significantly associated with nonexudative NV. More than a third of eyes with nonexudative NV at baseline progressed to exudation, with larger baseline lesion size, increase in vessel density, and vessel length density associated with progression to exudation. Monitoring of nonexudative NV eyes is crucial.
