Blue carbon effects of mangrove restoration in subtropics where Spartina alterniflora invaded

Jiali Gu et al.

Summary: Mangrove swamps and salt marshes have a high capacity for carbon sequestration and storage. This study evaluated the effectiveness of mangrove transplantation for carbon sink potential, finding that invasive Spartina performed better than restored mangroves in storing carbon. Spartina invasion improved carbon sequestration in high sediment supply areas, while mangrove restoration failed. In low sediment supply areas, restored mangroves outperformed Spartina invasion after 5 years of planting.

Significant reduction of carbon stocks and changes of ecosystem service valuation of Indian Sundarban

Biswajit Bera et al.

Summary: The Sundarban mangrove ecosystem is a highly productive and valuable natural resource, providing numerous goods and services to millions of people. However, in recent decades, it has been deteriorating in terms of quality and quantity. This research aims to investigate the ecosystem service values using satellite data, analyze the dynamic pattern of carbon sequestration, and identify the hotspots of ESVs change. The results show that the mangrove forest has the highest ESV and acts as an important carbon sink. Illegal human encroachment poses a significant threat to the mangrove ecosystem, leading to substantial loss of ESVs and carbon storage.

Blue carbon sequestration following mangrove restoration: evidence from a carbon neutral case in China

Sourav Bagchi Ratul et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of plantation management on carbon sequestration in a carbon-neutral site in Xiamen, China. The results showed that the carbon sequestration rate of Kandelia obovata plantation was significantly higher than others when planted in the indirect shade of pioneer species. The carbon accumulation rate of Sonneratia plantation in China is comparable to those in Bangladesh. However, there was a difference in soil carbon accumulation rate between Sonneratia plantations in China and Bangladesh.

Blue carbon stocks, accumulation rates, and associated spatial variability in Brazilian mangroves

Vanessa Hatje et al.

Summary: The study found that salinity gradient has a less significant impact on the distribution of organic carbon and nitrogen stocks in mangrove soils, while there is greater variability along the intertidal gradient. In Brazil, the C-org storage in the upper meter of soils accounts for 3-8% of the carbon stored in mangrove soils globally.

Mangrove ecological services at the forefront of coastal change in the French overseas territories

Ewan Tregarot et al.

Summary: Mangroves are highly valuable in French overseas territories, providing ecosystem services in carbon sequestration, coastal protection, water purification, and fish biomass production. However, they are vulnerable to various stressors and the study highlights the importance of increased investment in their protection to maintain their services.

Carbon stock and storage pattern in the Sundarbans mangrove forest, NE coast of India

Jyotiskona Barik et al.

Summary: The study investigated the spatial distribution of mangrove biomass and organic carbon storage in the Indian part of the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest. Factors such as pore-water salinity and dominant mangrove species influenced the distribution of plant biomass. Litter fall and sediment organic carbon content play significant roles in the carbon cycling of the mangrove ecosystem, with refractory organic carbon decreasing with depth.
