Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) for municipal wastewater treatment- potential benefits, constraints, and future perspectives: An updated review

Alia Aslam et al.

Summary: The application of AnMBRs in municipal wastewater treatment is sustainable and beneficial, but challenges such as organic strength, membrane fouling, salinity build-up, inhibitory substances, temperature, and membrane stability need to be addressed for economic and technical viability. Further research is needed to determine the energy utilization and potential in AnMBRs for energy neutrality or positivity, as well as to address concurrent challenges in operation for future perspectives.

The effect of different static biocarriers on process performance, membrane fouling and microbial community in submerged membrane bioreactor treating municipal wastewater under high and low carbon/nitrogen ratios

K. M. Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of adding two different static biocarriers (PVC and PU) in MBR on process performance, membrane fouling, and microbial community when treating municipal wastewater with different carbon/nitrogen ratios. The results showed that PU biocarrier addition enhanced nitrogen removal and reduced membrane fouling, while PVC biocarrier addition did not have the same effect.

A Comprehensive Review on the Sustainable Treatment of Textile Wastewater: Zero Liquid Discharge and Resource Recovery Perspectives

Nusrat Jahan et al.

Summary: Textile wastewater treatment is essential for environmental protection and water resource reuse. The current treatment methods include primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment, with adsorption considered as one of the most feasible methods for dye and metal removal. Combining multiple treatment methods is the most flexible strategy due to the lack of a universally applicable solution. Strict enforcement of environmental regulations, increasing water resource costs and demand, and the rising costs and difficulties of wastewater disposal are driving efforts towards achieving zero liquid discharge.

Summary: This paper presents the results of a survey on full-scale membrane biological reactors (MBRs) wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Italy, including the opinions of plant managers on operational advantages and disadvantages. The data collected from several municipal WWTPs indicate that MBR technology has advantages in increasing treatment capacity and compactness, while membrane fouling and plant shutdown are important issues to consider.

Phosphoric acid surface modified Moringa oleifera leaves biochar for the sequestration of methyl orange from aqueous solution: Characterizations, isotherm, and kinetics analysis

Md Shahinoor Islam et al.

Summary: Biochar is a potential material for removing organic pollutants from wastewater. Surface-modified biochar derived from Moringa oleifera leaves demonstrated efficient sorption of methyl orange dye. The modification process improved the biochar's pore structure, surface functional groups, and stability. The highest adsorption capacity was achieved by activating the biochar at 500 degrees C with a phosphoric acid impregnation ratio of 1.5. The Langmuir isotherm model provided the best fit for describing the adsorption phenomenon. The results suggest that Moringa oleifera leaf-activated biochar can be an effective tool for treating methyl orange contaminated wastewater.

Effects of microplastic accumulation on floc characteristics and fouling behavior in a membrane bioreactor

Thitiwut Maliwan et al.

Summary: The presence of microplastics in sewage sludge during wastewater treatment in a membrane bioreactor system decreased sludge floc size and hydrophobicity, and had a slight impact on microbial structure. Microplastics also acted as a scouring material on membrane surfaces, affecting biofilm structures and reducing severe cake fouling in the system operated for up to 4 months.

Future global urban water scarcity and potential solutions

Chunyang He et al.

Summary: Urbanization and climate change are exacerbating global urban water scarcity, with the number of people affected projected to increase significantly by 2050, particularly in countries like India. Large cities and megacities will be most severely affected, and while infrastructure investment can help alleviate water scarcity, potential environmental trade-offs must be carefully considered.
