Reject brine management: Denitrification and zero liquid discharge (ZLD)-Current status, challenges and future prospects

Amanda Prado de Nicolas et al.

Summary: Water is crucial for sustainable development, but its availability has been significantly threatened in the 21st century. Freshwater supplies are being depleted due to population growth, industrialization, and agriculture. Water contamination, especially nitrate pollution, is a major concern. Desalination and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) have been proposed as solutions. This study analyzes and compares brine treatment technologies targeting ZLD, and lists different denitrification processes.

Membrane desalination for water treatment: recent developments, techno-economic evaluation and innovative approaches toward water sustainability

Yan Cao et al.

Summary: In recent decades, the growing global population has posed a challenge in ensuring a sustainable supply of freshwater. Scientists have turned to the abundant brackish/seawater resources on Earth's surface and have implemented novel desalination technologies to meet the increasing water demands in various industrial and non-industrial applications. This paper aims to analyze and evaluate the efficiency of membrane-based desalination techniques, including reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, microfiltration, and nanofiltration, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each technique in water treatment. Additionally, a techno-economic comparison of commonly used desalination technologies is conducted to assess cost-effectiveness and the true costs of conventional methods. The paper also explores the use of novel nanomaterials for reducing energy consumption and various approaches to controlling fouling phenomena.

Investigations on the effect of spacer in direct contact and air gap membrane distillation using computational fluid dynamics

Anshul Yadav et al.

Summary: A comprehensive two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model was developed to simulate heat transfer, mass transfer, and fluid flow in DCMD and AGMD processes. The study found that using spacers can improve the performance parameters such as mass flux and thermal efficiency, while reducing concentration polarization.

Resistance of Polypropylene Membrane to Oil Fouling during Membrane Distillation

Marek Gryta

Summary: The study investigated the influence of oil emulsion presence in water on membrane distillation for water desalination. It was found that adding oil caused a decrease in permeate flux, but hydrophobic membranes remained non-wetted, restricting oil deposition on the membranes.

Bioelectrochemical system as an innovative technology for treatment of produced water from oil and gas industry: A review

Jonnathan Cabrera et al.

Summary: The review summarized the research progress of bioelectrochemical systems (BES) in treating produced water, with a critical analysis of the parameters influencing BES performance. Inoculum, temperature, hydraulic retention time, external resistance, and the use of real or synthetic produced water were found to significantly impact BES performance. The use of real produced water as feed in experiments is highly recommended for better application of BES technology.

Nafion-PTFE hollow fiber composite membranes for improvement of anti-fouling and anti-wetting properties in vacuum membrane distillation

Sha Yu et al.

Summary: Nafion-PTFE hollow fiber composite membranes show excellent anti-fouling and anti-wetting performance in vacuum membrane distillation, exhibiting stable flux and high salt rejection. The composite membrane improves anti-fouling properties and alleviates wetting phenomena caused by surfactants, with a pressure depression factor decreasing with increasing feed temperature.

Insight into the feed/permeate flow velocity on the trade-off of water flux and scaling resistance of superhydrophobic and welding-pore fibrous membrane in membrane distillation

Zhigao Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found that designing welded-pore and superhydrophobic fibrous membrane combined with optimizing flow velocity is extraordinarily effective in simultaneously improving membrane water flux and mitigating membrane scaling for concentrating hypersaline wastewaters. These findings are significant for breaking the trade-off between membrane water flux and scaling for practical application in industries.

Membrane Distillation of Saline Water Contaminated with Oil and Surfactants

Wirginia Tomczak et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of low-concentration surfactants on the efficiency of membrane distillation in oil-contaminated high-salinity solutions. It was found that oil contamination decreases the permeate flux, while surfactants accelerate membrane wetting and scaling.

Clean treatment of rejected brine by zero liquid discharge thermal desalination in Persian Gulf countries

Arezoo Ghalavand et al.

Summary: Through a technoeconomic investigation, the study found that evaporation/crystallization and membrane distillation/crystallization processes had the lowest production costs and total fixed capital investments for treating brine rejected from desalination units. While the cost and output ratio of evaporation/crystallization and membrane distillation/crystallization were similar, the former was able to produce demineralized water which gave it an edge in economic value.

Application of Capillary Polypropylene Membranes for Microfiltration of Oily Wastewaters: Experiments and Modeling

Wirginia Tomczak et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microfiltration process of model emulsions and real oily wastewaters using capillary polypropylene membranes. Results showed that the membranes produced high-quality permeate, and the initial decline in permeate flux could be slightly alleviated by increasing feed temperature. Hermia's models were used to interpret fouling mechanisms, and efficient methods of membrane cleaning were presented. The findings may have a significant impact on enhancing the use of polypropylene MF membranes in oily wastewater treatments.
