The Potential of Microextraction Techniques for the Analysis of Bioactive Compounds in Food

Jorge A. M. Pereira et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the application of different microextraction approaches for the analysis of bioactive compounds in foods since 2015. Microextraction methods not only offer the opportunity to mitigate the environmental impact of organic solvents usage, but also improve lab equipment. Phenolics and alkaloids extraction from fruits, medicinal herbs, juices, and coffee using miniaturized formats of solid-phase extraction and liquid-liquid microextraction are the most popular applications. Furthermore, emergent sorbents based on carbon nanotubes and magnetic nanoparticles contribute to improving analytical limits.

Pulsed ultrasound-assisted extraction followed by purification with SBA-15 for the control of opium alkaloids in biscuits and sponge cakes

Gema Casado-Hidalgo et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop an efficient, fast, and environmentally friendly method to control the content of opium alkaloids (OAs) in food products containing poppy seeds. By optimizing the ultrasound-assisted extraction and solid phase extraction steps, the concentrations of OAs in the samples were successfully analyzed and detected.

Total Ion Chromatogram and Total Ion Mass Spectrum as Alternative Tools for Detection and Discrimination (A Review)

Marta Barea-Sepulveda et al.

Summary: Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry are widely used techniques in the analysis of complex mixtures due to their advantages in selectivity, reproducibility, precision, and sensitivity. However, the complex and time-consuming data processing, requiring expertise, can be a drawback in certain fields. Therefore, alternative data processing approaches have been proposed to achieve faster, simpler, and almost automated analysis outcomes.

Evaluation of Thermal Degradation of Tropane and Opium Alkaloids in Gluten-Free Corn Breadsticks Samples Contaminated with Stramonium Seeds and Baked with Poppy Seeds under Different Conditions

Fernando L. Vera-Baquero et al.

Summary: This study investigated the thermal degradation of tropane and opium alkaloids in breadsticks prepared with corn flour contaminated with Datura stramonium seeds and containing Papaver somniferum L. seeds. A fast, easy, and efficient method based on solid-liquid extraction (SLE) followed by high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) analysis was developed and validated. The results showed a decrease in alkaloid content under baking, with morphine and codeine experiencing the highest degradation.

Green extraction approach based on μSPEed® followed by HPLC-MS/MS for the determination of atropine and scopolamine in tea and herbal tea infusions

Lorena Gonzalez-Gomez et al.

Summary: A high throught methododology based on a green extraction technique, mu SPEed (R), followed by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) has been proposed for the analysis of atropine and scopolamine in tea and herbal tea infusions. The method was validated and found to be effective and accurate.

Determination of morphine, codeine, and thebaine concentrations from poppy seed tea using magnetic carbon nanotubes facilitated dispersive micro-solid phase extraction and GC-MS analysis

Sun Yi Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of small quantity and repeat brewing on opiate concentrations in poppy seed tea. Results showed that brewing with a small quantity of seeds may provide minimal analgesic and euphoric effects, with over 80% of the total opiate yield extracted in the first brew.

Mesostructured Silica-Coated Magnetic Nanoparticles to Extract Six Opium Alkaloids in Poppy Seeds Prior to Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry Analysis

Gema Casado-Hidalgo et al.

Summary: A rapid and efficient method was optimized for determining all main opioids in poppy seeds, with considerable amounts exceeding the maximum limits established in some EU countries. Additionally, inadequate labelling was found in some commercial samples for human consumption, revealing significant amounts of alkaloids despite Papaver rhoeas L. seeds being declared on the product label.
