Process efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions in black soldier fly larvae composting of fruit and vegetable waste with and without pre-treatment

L. Lindberg et al.

Summary: Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) composting is a technology that implements circular economy principles. This study investigated the efficiency and emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) and ammonia from BSFL composting of orange peels and broccoli and cauliflower trimmings. Results showed that pre-treatment did not significantly improve waste-to-biomass conversion efficiency (BCE), but it reduced the material amount. GHG emissions were low, and pre-treatment increased waste treatment capacity. However, it also increased ammonia emissions.

Correlating black soldier fly larvae growths with soluble nutrients derived from thermally pre-treated waste activated sludge

Chin Seng A. Liew et al.

Summary: Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) can be effectively grown using thermally pre-treated waste activated sludge (WAS). The pre-treatment improves the palatability of the substrate and enhances the growth of BSFL, especially at temperatures above 75°C. The highest larva weight gain was observed at a pre-treatment temperature of 90°C for 16 hours. The changes in WAS characteristics, particularly soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), were found to accurately predict the growth behavior of BSFL.

Black soldier fly larvae for organic manure recycling and its potential for a circular bioeconomy: A review

Tao Liu et al.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive review of the potential of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) for recycling organic waste from livestock farming. It discusses various aspects such as manure bioconversion, the application of BSFL in organic farming, and the process performance of biomolecule degradation. The review also explores the economic feasibility, lifecycle assessment, and circular bioeconomy of using BSFL in manure recycling, as well as future perspectives for its application.

Low-cost technology for recycling agro-industrial waste into nutrient-rich organic fertilizer using black soldier fly

Dennis Beesigamukama et al.

Summary: This study found that mixing brewer's spent grain with sawdust can increase black soldier fly larval yield and improve nutrient content of frass fertilizer. The substrate with a C/N ratio of 15 showed the best results. Compost maturation time was shortened to five weeks, providing high-quality fertilizer for organic farming.

Impact of Diets Including Agro-Industrial By-Products on the Fatty Acid and Sterol Profiles of Larvae Biomass from Ephestia kuehniella, Tenebrio molitor and Hermetia illucens

Fatma Boukid et al.

Summary: Insects are a potential source of lipids, with fatty acid compositions and sterols varying depending on diet composition and species. H. illucens has low cholesterol but high campesterol and beta-sitosterol levels, while T. molitor and E. kuehniella have high cholesterol and low campesterol contents. Rearing insects on agro-industrial by-products can be a sustainable strategy for the circular economy, providing valuable fat sources for humans and animals.
