Magneto-mechanical system to reproduce and quantify complex strain patterns in biological materials

Miguel Angel Moreno-Mateos et al.

Summary: Biological cells and tissues are influenced by mechanical stress and strain from their surrounding substrate. A new experimental system using soft magneto-active polymers allows for controlled deformation of substrates, enabling the study of mechanobiological processes. The system has shown versatility in reproducing complex mechanical scenarios and transmitting physiologically relevant forces.

Alternative in vitro models used in the main safety tests of cosmetic products and new challenges

Edith Filaire et al.

Summary: This review introduces the main alternative in vitro models used in safety tests of cosmetic products, focusing on skin sensitization, corrosion, irritation, and absorption. It also discusses the advantages and limitations of each model and presents recent innovative 3D cell technologies such as Organ-on-a-Chip models. However, the validation and acceptance of these technologies by regulatory organizations are necessary.

Protocol Normal and tumor-derived organoids as a drug screening platform for tumor-specific drug vulnerabilities

Camilla Calandrini et al.

Summary: Patient-derived and normal tissue-derived tumor organoids are useful for predicting treatment responses and drug toxicity testing. Combining both types of organoids allows for screening of tumor-specific drug vulnerabilities.

Contraction of fibrin-derived matrices and its implications for in vitro human skin bioengineering

Andres Montero et al.

Summary: The study showed that temperature had minimal impact on the contraction rate of plasma-derived fibrin hydrogels, while the presence of plasma proteins significantly affected the contraction. Additionally, the addition of fibroblasts and keratinocytes also influenced the height of the hydrogels.

Multiview tiling light sheet microscopy for 3D high-resolution live imaging

Mostafa Aakhte et al.

Summary: Light-sheet or selective plane illumination microscopy (SPIM) is suitable for in toto imaging of living specimens at high temporal-spatial resolution, but faces limitations due to light scattering in opaque specimens. The Multiview tiling SPIM (MT-SPIM) combines the strengths of Multi-view SPIM (M-SPIM) and a confined, multi-tiled light sheet, providing high-resolution, robust, and rotation-free imaging of living specimens. It improves axial resolution by a factor of two, enhancing automated segmentation of cellular structures.

Real-time multi-angle projection imaging of biological dynamics

Bo-Jui Chang et al.

Summary: Multiangle projection imaging accelerates volumetric imaging by converting any camera-based microscope with optical sectioning capability into a system that can capture images from multiple perspectives. This method reduces data overhead, speeds up imaging, and allows for real-time stereoscopic imaging and three-dimensional particle localization. The technology has been successfully demonstrated on various microscopes and specimens, showing potential applications in cancer cell morphodynamics, calcium signaling, and simultaneous imaging of multiple perspectives of a beating heart.
