Detection of Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in the Endocervix of Asymptomatic Pregnant Women. Can STEC Be a Risk Factor for Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes?

Maria Lujan Scalise et al.

Summary: The presence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and other virulence factor-positive E. coli in pregnant women suggests a potential negative impact on pregnancy outcomes. Analysis of endocervical swab samples from prenatal examinations revealed that approximately 11.7% of the samples tested positive for E. coli, with some samples showing the presence of STEC-specific genes and virulence factor genes. Furthermore, supernatants from the E. coli isolates exhibited cytotoxic activity in various cells, highlighting the potential harmful effects of STEC during pregnancy.

Rapid and Ultrasensitive Detection of Mutations and Genes Relevant to Antimicrobial Resistance in Bacteria

Francois Huber et al.

Summary: The study presents a diagnostic assay based on cantilever nanosensors for rapid and accurate detection of antibiotic resistance in MDR bacteria. Highly specific RNA capture probes are used to detect SNPs and resistance genes in Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, with unprecedented sensitivity.

Diclofenac Resensitizes Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus to β-Lactams and Prevents Implant Infections

Shutao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows that high-dose diclofenac inhibits the growth of MRSA without inducing drug-resistant mutations easily, while low-dose diclofenac can resensitize bacteria to beta-lactams and inhibit biofilm formation. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses indicate that diclofenac reduces the expression of genes and proteins associated with antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation. Murine implant infection models suggest that diclofenac combined with beta-lactams can substantially alleviate MRSA infections in vivo, offering promising applications for preventing perioperative infections.
