Low Power Respiration Monitoring Using Wearable 3D Knitted Helical Coils

K. Kiener et al.

Summary: We present a low power inductive wearable plethysmography system that combines ultrasensitive 3D knitted helical coils and a high quality factor oscillator circuit. The system achieves linearity and negligible hysteresis, and offers a good compromise between sensitivity and power consumption. The optimized design of the knitted helical coil and careful material selection result in a sensitivity of 2.7 kHz per mm change in circumference and a power consumption of 6.85 mW per 30 ms measurement time. This system can be used for long term breathing monitoring with a garment that is indistinguishable from everyday clothing.

Sensing performance of knitted strain sensor on two-dimensional and three-dimensional surfaces

Yutian Li et al.

Summary: A knitted strain sensor was designed and fabricated for human motion detection applications. A new method using a three-dimensional curved surface was proposed to evaluate the sensing performance, showing a sensing range twice that of the traditional two-dimensional method. This research suggests that the three-dimensional testing method could effectively evaluate the sensing performance of fabric strain sensors.
