Outside the Safe Operating Space of the Planetary Boundary for Novel Entities

Linn Persson et al.

Summary: This article suggests that the safe operating space of the planetary boundary for novel entities is exceeded due to the increasing production and releases exceeding the global capacity for assessment and monitoring. Plastic pollution is highlighted as a major concern. The article presents an impact pathway from the production of novel entities to their impacts on Earth system processes and proposes several criteria for control variables. Urgent action is recommended to reduce the harm associated with exceeding the boundary by reducing the production and releases of novel entities.

Summary: Pregnancy involves significant physiological and psychological changes in the mother to meet the needs of the growing fetus, with potential long-term impacts on health for both mother and baby. Dysregulation of placental function may lead to increased risk of chronic diseases for the fetus later in life.

Glyphosate-based herbicide induces long-lasting impairment in neuronal and glial differentiation

Lua Reis et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term effects of subcytotoxic concentrations of GBH and GLY on the differentiation of human neuroepithelial stem cells (NES). It was found that GBH induced abnormal cellular differentiation, including immature neuronal profiles and a shift towards glial cell fate. These effects were associated with dysregulation of key genes involved in neurogenesis.

Does Glyphosate Affect the Human Microbiota?

Pere Puigbo et al.

Summary: Glyphosate, the most widely used agrochemical, was previously considered safe for human microbiota due to the absence of the target enzyme, but recent studies have shown potential risks to human microbiome. Further research is needed to determine the effects of glyphosate on healthy human microbiota.

The surfactant co-formulant POEA in the glyphosate-based herbicide RangerPro but not glyphosate alone causes necrosis in Caco-2 and HepG2 human cell lines and ER stress in the ToxTracker assay

Robin Mesnage et al.

Summary: The co-formulant POE-15 tallow amine (POE-15) and the active ingredient glyphosate in herbicides have been found to be cytotoxic, causing cell necrosis and oxidative stress. The study highlights the importance of comprehensive testing of both co-formulants and active ingredients of commercial pesticides to ensure better regulation and protection of public health and the environment.

Suborning science for profit: Monsanto, glyphosate, and private science research misconduct

Leland Glenna et al.

Summary: The study revealed a private firm's efforts to distort the scientific peer-review process, engage in ghostwriting, and influence editorial decisions in order to manipulate the regulatory process and continue selling a potentially dangerous product. These findings have implications for the integrity of scientific peer review and public trust in science.

Cancer incidence in agricultural workers: Findings from an international consortium of agricultural cohort studies (AGRICOH)

Kayo Togawa et al.

Summary: This study evaluated cancer incidence in male and female agricultural workers in an international consortium, AGRICOH, compared to their respective general populations. The results showed that agricultural workers have a lower risk of various cancers, but an elevated risk of prostate cancer, multiple myeloma (female), and melanoma of skin (female). There were significant variations in cancer risks between different cohorts.

Review: Mechanisms of Glyphosate and Glyphosate-Based Herbicides Action in Female and Male Fertility in Humans and Animal Models

Loise Serra et al.

Summary: This review discusses the effects of glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides on reproductive functions and endocrine disruption, mainly by interfering with the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in males and females, potentially leading to changes in cell viability and proliferation. The presence of formulants in GBHs makes them more toxic than glyphosate alone.

Risk of pesticide pollution at the global scale

Fiona H. M. Tang et al.

Summary: Pesticides are widely used in agriculture to protect food production but also pose risks to water quality, biodiversity, and human health. A global study found that 64% of agricultural land worldwide is at risk of pesticide pollution, with 31% at high risk, particularly in areas with high biodiversity and water scarcity. High-concern regions such as South Africa, China, India, Australia, and Argentina were identified as facing high pesticide pollution risk, high biodiversity, and water scarcity issues.

Endocrine disruptors also function as nervous disruptors and can be renamed endocrine and nervous disruptors (ENDs)

Gilles-Eric Seralini et al.

Summary: Endocrine disruption and endocrine disruptors, established as scientific concepts in 1995, have been shown to impact the nervous system. Research indicates that approximately 80% of endocrine disruptors operate through mechanisms beyond the thyroid. This suggests a new concept of endocrine and nervous disruptors collectively referred to as ENDs, which share similarities with spam in electronic communications technologies.
