Methanol poisoning during COVID-19 pandemic; A systematic scoping review

Razieh Sadat Mousavi-Roknabadi et al.

Summary: This systematic scoping review assessed the epidemiology, clinical findings, patient management, causes, and recommendations for prevention or reduction of methanol poisoning during the COVID-19 pandemic. After searching and evaluating relevant studies, the findings were summarized in four categories. The results indicate that methanol poisoning poses significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Severe visual loss caused by inhalational methanol poisoning in fireworks production: A report on 3 cases

Lei Luo et al.

Summary: Workers in the fireworks industry face the risk of methanol poisoning, with three cases of visual impairment due to inhalation of high concentrations of methanol reported. Early intervention and correction of metabolic acidosis are crucial for rescuing visual impairment caused by methanol exposure. Awareness and supervision of commercial alcohol use are essential for similar industrial processes.

Methanol-induced optic neuropathy: a still-present problem

Slawomir Liberski et al.

Summary: Methanol-induced optic neuropathy is a serious condition that can lead to visual impairment or blindness. It tends to occur as mass poisonings in poor societies in developing countries. The main mechanism involves the inhibition of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Other mechanisms, such as oxidative stress, inflammation, and damage to key proteins, also play a role. Histopathological changes in the eye tissues include degeneration of the optic nerve and retina. Despite therapeutic advances, visual sequelae are still seen in a significant number of survivors.

Fatal methanol poisoning with different clinical and autopsy findings: Case report and literature review

Meihui Tian et al.

Summary: Methanol poisoning is a major cause of high morbidity and mortality, with diagnosis depending on the variability of methanol concentration and postmortem manifestations. Various factors, including comprehensive autopsy, quantitative detection of methanol and formic acid, and genotype analysis, influence the metabolism and toxicity of methanol intoxication.

Mortality and associated risk factors in patients with severe methanol or ethylene glycol poisoning treated with dialysis: a retrospective cohort study

Emma Kuusela et al.

Summary: This study compares the initial clinical course and 90-day mortality in adults with methanol or ethylene glycol poisoning treated with dialysis. The results show that patients with ethylene glycol poisoning are older and have lower urine output after dialysis initiation. The mortality rate is associated with metabolic acidosis, a large anion gap, and altered mental status on admission.

Research Paper: Demographic and Clinical Characteristics of Patients Who Died of Methanol Toxicity During COVID 19 Outbreak in Loghman-e-Hakim Hospital, Tehran

Shahin Shadnia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of patients who died during the methanol poisoning outbreak in Tehran in 2020. It was found that the outbreak was primarily caused by the consumption of alcoholic drinks containing methanol. Men were more affected, possibly due to cultural and social factors. Female patients had a higher probability of seizures, potentially due to enhanced NMDA receptor activity by estrogen. Most patients showed signs of liver damage.

Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio versus platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio in predicting clinical outcomes in acute methanol poisoning

Hanan M. Abdelwahab et al.

Summary: This study compares the prognostic roles of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and their combination in predicting clinical outcomes in methanol-intoxicated patients. The study found that both NLR and PLR can effectively differentiate between survivors and non-survivors, with PLR being a better predictive factor for permanent visual impairment. A combination of NLR and PLR can provide a more powerful prediction for overall clinical outcomes.

The outbreak of methanol intoxication during COVID-19 pandemic: prevalence of brain lesions and its predisposing factors

Leila Simani et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the consumption of methanol-containing beverages increased as people incorrectly believed that alcohol could protect them against the virus. This study found a high prevalence of brain lesions in patients with methanol toxicity, with higher mortality associated with brain necrosis, intracerebral hemorrhage, brain edema, and lower Glasgow Coma Scale scores. Chronic alcohol consumption was associated with a lower mortality rate compared to first-time drinkers.
