Enhancing rice straw compost with an amino acid-derived ionic liquid as additive

Huanhuan Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that adding amino acid-derived ionic liquids can significantly improve the quality of compost, increasing levels of humus and total nitrogen concentrations. Compared to the control group without this additive, the compost with the additive showed higher concentrations.

Selection of rice and maize varieties with low cadmium accumulation and derivation of soil environmental thresholds in karst

Mengqi Xu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the uptake and accumulation characteristics of cadmium in soil-crop samples of maize and rice in the core karst region of East Asia, screening low-accumulating crop varieties and deducing environmental cadmium thresholds. The results showed varying degrees of cadmium contamination in both maize and rice fields, with specific low-accumulating crop varieties identified for local cultivation. The environmental cadmium thresholds determined in this study will help prevent cadmium contamination in maize and rice crops in the region.

Citric acid inhibits Cd uptake by improving the preferential transport of Mn and triggering the defense response of amino acids in grains

Weijie Xue et al.

Summary: The study found that foliar application of citric acid (CA) can increase the Mn:Cd ratio in rice grains, inhibit Cd accumulation in grains, and enhance the expression levels of OsNramp2, 3 and 5 in panicles. CA also affects amino acid metabolism, increasing the content of specific amino acids in grains.

Manganese facilitates cadmium stabilization through physicochemical dynamics and amino acid accumulation in rice rhizosphere under flood-associated low pe plus pH

Meng Wang et al.

Summary: The study showed that Mn increased the expression of Cd-related genes in rice root tissue, leading to metabolic reprogramming of soil and rice roots. Mn induced amino acid synthesis in rice roots under variable pe+pH levels, resulting in rhizosphere accumulation of free L-lysine, glycine, and glutamine, which can bind metal ions and form complexes with Cd. Therefore, secreted amino acids, low pe+pH, and free Mn can together offer a multi-faceted approach to managing Cd toxicity in rice.
