Improving streamflow prediction in the WRF-Hydro model with LSTM networks

Kyeungwoo Cho et al.

Summary: Researchers propose a method combining WRF-Hydro and LSTM network, called WRF-Hydro-LSTM, to improve streamflow simulations. Experimental results show that WRF-Hydro-LSTM outperforms both traditional methods and using LSTM alone in streamflow prediction.

Variation of runoff and sediment inflows to the Three Gorges Reservoir: Impact of upstream cascade reservoirs

Haochen Yan et al.

Summary: This study reveals the impact of upstream cascade reservoirs on the annual runoff and sediment load inflows to the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). The results show that precipitation dominated the runoff change, while human activities were the main driving factors for sediment load reduction in the studied area. Sediment retention induced by large reservoirs in the upstream of TGR was identified as the major reason for sediment load reduction. The unprecedented situation in the upper Yangtze River Basin may have profound impacts on the morphology and ecology of TGR and the downstream Yangtze River.

Hydrothermal Regime Variation and Ecological Effects on Fish Reproduction in the Yangtze River

Wenxian Guo et al.

Summary: The water temperature of the Yangtze River is warming, with sudden increases in temperature at different stations in certain years, and a periodicity can be observed. The variability of hydrothermal indicators at Cuntan and Yichang stations is high, close to the variation in height. The construction of the Three Gorges Dam has delayed the arrival date of upper reproduction water temperature for major fish species in the area.

Comparison of Deep Learning Techniques for River Streamflow Forecasting

Xuan-Hien Le et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of DL models in streamflow forecasting by comparing six supervised learning models. The findings suggest that LSTM-based models outperformed FFNN and CNN models in terms of both performance and stability. However, the more complex StackedLSTM and BiLSTM models did not show improvements in performance. For streamflow forecasting, simple architecture LSTM and GRU models are sufficient for producing reliable forecasts while minimizing computation time.
