Simulating the effect of climate change on performance of a monolayer cover combined with an elevated water table placed on acid-generating mine tailings

Elodie Lieber et al.

Summary: This study evaluated three approaches to simulate climate change and compared the impact on reclamation performance. Results showed that the projected impact of climate change varied depending on the approach used, but a well-designed monolayer cover with elevated water table remained efficient in the long term.

Understanding mechanisms of recharge through fractured sandstone using high-frequency water-level-response data

F. Manna et al.

Summary: This study uses high-frequency time series analysis and cross-correlation to investigate the relationship between precipitation and water-level responses in sandstone wells in southern California. The results suggest that the water table only rises when a certain precipitation threshold is reached, indicating replenishment of water content from a previous dry season. The study also identifies different flow mechanisms based on lag times. These findings are consistent with previous research on Chalk aquifer in England, indicating similar precipitation responses in fractured porous media.

Enhancing solute transport by pressure-wave driven flow in unsaturated porous media

Doron Kalisman et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates solute leaching under unsaturated conditions, and shows that pressure-wave pulse flux treatment enhances solute displacement compared to drag-dominant continuous flux treatment. The pressure waves induce higher pressure gradients and more uniform wetting, leading to increased solute mass leaching and enhanced transport.

Uranium retention on iron oxyhydroxides in post-mining environmental conditions

Florian Lahrouch et al.

Summary: Investigating uranium migration mechanisms related to the weathering of waste rocks is crucial for addressing potential environmental issues caused by uranium mining. This study showed the important role of iron oxyhydroxides in immobilizing and concentrating uranium, with uranyl ternary surface complexes identified at the ferrihydrite surface. Additionally, goethite and lepidocrocite were found to be secondary traps for U immobilization.

Projection of Hydro-Climatic Extreme Events under Climate Change in Yom and Nan River Basins, Thailand

Chanchai Petpongpan et al.

Summary: Due to global warming, climate change has led to a continuous increase in average air temperature, annual rainfall, and annual runoff, especially in the intermediate future (2046-2070) under RCP 8.5. The study shows fluctuating trends in the occurrence of extreme floods and drought events from the future (2021-2045) to the far future (2071-2095) under RCP 2.6, but events under RCP 8.5 appear to be more severe.

Long-Term Evolution of Uranium Mobility within Sulfated Mill Tailings in Arid Regions: A Reactive Transport Study

Nicolas Seigneur et al.

Summary: Tailings management is crucial in mining operations to prevent environmental dispersion of contaminants, with geochemical models and reactive transport modeling providing quantitative assessment of contaminant mobility. In arid regions, evaporative processes can lead to specific mineral formations on tailings surfaces, impacting mine management practices.
