Global health burden of ambient PM2.5 and the contribution of anthropogenic black carbon and organic aerosols

Sourangsu Chowdhury et al.

Summary: Chronic exposure to fine particulate matter poses a major global health risk, with domestic energy use from solid biofuel burning identified as the largest contributor to black carbon, primary organic aerosols, and anthropogenic secondary organic aerosols in the atmosphere.

Updated World Health Organization Air Quality Guidelines Highlight the Importance of Non-anthropogenic PM2.5

Sidhant J. Pai et al.

Summary: The recent update by the World Health Organization indicates that over 90% of the global population is exposed to PM2.5 concentrations that exceed their guidelines. Even under extreme abatement scenarios, more than half of the world's population will still experience PM2.5 exposures above the recommended level. A speciated aerosol exposure guideline is suggested for region-specific air quality management decisions and health-burden estimates.

How low can you go? Air pollution affects mortality at very low levels

Scott Weichenthal et al.

Summary: The World Health Organization has released new guidelines recommending an annual average concentration of 5.g/m(3) for outdoor fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5). A study conducted in a low exposure environment found a supralinear concentration-response relationship between outdoor PM2.5 and mortality at very low concentrations. The updated global concentration-response function suggests that outdoor PM2.5 is responsible for an additional 1.5 million deaths globally annually compared to previous estimates.

Monthly Global Estimates of Fine Particulate Matter and Their Uncertainty

Aaron van Donkelaar et al.

Summary: This study developed a methodology for monthly PM2.5 estimates and uncertainties using satellite retrievals, chemical transport modeling, and ground-based measurements. Findings show higher winter PM2.5 concentrations in many densely populated regions, with South Asia and East Asia having particularly high levels, although East Asia showed a decreasing trend in PM2.5 concentrations over the period studied.

Global and national assessment of the incidence of asthma in children and adolescents from major sources of ambient NO2

Sourangsu Chowdhury et al.

Summary: The study found that approximately 14% of global pediatric asthma incidence is attributable to NO2 exposure, with emissions from land transportation being the leading contributor at about 44%. Domestic burning of solid fuels is the main source in India and Nepal, while shipping emissions are the leading source in Scandinavian countries.

Summary: By fusing observations and models, we produced high-resolution global surface ozone estimates from 1990 to 2017. The novel combination of M(3)Fusion and BME methods improved the accuracy of ozone estimation, revealing an increasing global ozone exposure in highly populated regions of Asia and Africa.

Accelerated Aging and Age-Related Diseases (CVD and Neurological) Due to Air Pollution and Traffic Noise Exposure

Omar Hahad et al.

Summary: The process of aging is influenced by a range of environmental, sociodemographic, and biopsychosocial factors, with only 25% of diversity in longevity explained by genetic factors. The increase in global average life expectancy has led to an aging population, correlating with the development of cardiovascular and neurological diseases. Identifying and preventing environmental factors that accelerate aging is crucial in promoting healthy aging.
