Structurally modulated and functionalized carbon nanotubes as potential filler for Nafion matrix toward improved power output and durability in proton exchange membrane fuel cells operating at reduced relative humidity

Mohanraj Vinothkannan et al.

Summary: This study reported the synthesis of a novel hybrid material, sulfonated carbon nanotubes-sulfonated unzipped carbon nanotubes (SCNTs-SUCNTs), which showed enhanced surface area and increased density of sulfonic acid groups. The resulting composite membrane exhibited promising thermal, mechanical, and oxidative stabilities, as well as satisfactory physicochemical performances. Under 20% relative humidity, the Nafion/SCNTs-SUCNTs composite membrane achieved reliable proton conductivity and durability at 60 degrees C.

Enhanced electrochemical performance and long-term durability of composite membranes through a binary interface with sulfonated unzipped graphite nanofibers for polymer electrolyte fuel cells operating under low relative humidity

Ae Rhan Kim et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of phenylsulfonic-acid functionalized and unzipped graphite nanofiber (SO3H-UGNF) as a proton-conductive material for a proton exchange membrane (PEM) in a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) operating under low relative humidity (RH). The integration of SO3H-UGNF into a sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membrane significantly improves its physicochemical, thermal, and tensile properties. The optimized SPEEK/SO3H-UGNF membrane exhibits excellent proton conductivity and higher power density and durability compared to SPEEK membrane under low RH conditions.

Carbon nanotube, graphene oxide and montmorillonite as conductive fillers in polymer electrolyte membrane for fuel cell: an overview

Maryam Taufiq Musa et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotube, graphene oxide, and montmorillonite are highly promising conductive fillers with outstanding cell performances based on previous studies. These materials are chosen as incorporated fillers recently due to their rolling up direction (chirality vector of graphene sheet), reactive functional groups attached on the carbon atoms and ionic multilayers of the tetrahedral and octahedral sheet, respectively. High proton conductivity, low electronic conductivity, low fuel permeability, low water transport, low production cost, and high mechanical stability in both dry and wet condition are properties that should be portrayed by a good hybrid membrane.
