Crash precipitation of nanoscale B-phase PVDF particles

Mikel J. Zaitzeff et al.

Summary: Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) exhibits piezoelectricity in its crystalline B-phase, where a voltage can be generated from uniform stress or strain. Current techniques for crystallizing PVDF into the B-phase typically result in films or fibers, with few methods producing B-phase particles. This study presents a method for precipitating nano-sized B-phase PVDF particles (<100 nm) from a solution using commercially available materials. These particles have the potential to improve electrical and mechanical properties when used as inclusions in composite materials, and the method offers a potential route for controlling the phase and size of PVDF particles for specific applications.

High-Temperature Interactions of Metal Oxides and a PVDF Binder

Miles C. Rehwoldt et al.

Summary: The interactions between nanoscale metal oxides and poly(vinylidene fluoride) at high temperature were investigated. It was found that HF gas reacts exergonically and exothermically with hydroxyl-terminated metal oxide surfaces, potentially forming stronger metal-fluorine bonds. However, not all compositions produce stable metal fluoride.

Summary: The addition of graphene (GE) in PVDF composite fibers, followed by post-stretching, can enhance the beta crystal content and properties of the fibers. GE improves crystal content and orientation, as well as mechanical properties, hydrophobicity, and oleophilicity. Proper post-stretching ratio contributes to crystal phase transition and performance enhancement.

Free radical decay and micro-structure evolution of PVDF membranes in situ irradiated by synchrotron radiation X-ray

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: Synchrotron radiation X-ray was used as both the irradiation source and testing tool for PVDF membranes. The structural evolution of the PVDF membranes under irradiation was analyzed using in-situ and ex-situ characterization methods. The study demonstrated that the synchrotron radiation X-ray destroyed the long periodic structure and crystalline region of the PVDF membranes, leading to a decline in crystallinity.

Summary: The glass transition temperature and binodal phase transition of PVDF/PEO/graphene nanocomposites were monitored using MTDSC, with the composition-dependent T-g modeled through various equations. A LCST phase diagram was proposed, and the melting and crystallization behavior of the nanocomposites were evaluated, with crystallinity found to be the most affected parameter. The effect of graphene nanosheets and blend composition on thermal degradation was also investigated using TGA.
