Phycobilisome Breakdown Effector NbID Is Required To Maintain Cellular Amino Acid Composition during Nitrogen Starvation

Vanessa Krauspe et al.

Summary: The small protein NbID plays a crucial role in maintaining metabolic homeostasis by regulating amino acid and organic acid pools in photosynthetic cyanobacteria during nitrogen starvation. Its conservation throughout cyanobacterial radiation suggests its essential function in these organisms.

The essential role of sodium bioenergetics and ATP homeostasis in the developmental transitions of a cyanobacterium

Sofia Doello et al.

Summary: The ability to resume growth after a dormant period is crucial for bacterial survival and spreading. Synechocystis cells reduce ATP levels during nitrogen starvation and use sodium bioenergetics to maintain viability. When nitrogen becomes available, they increase ATP levels through sodium bioenergetics and glycogen catabolism to restore photosynthetic machinery and resume growth.

Structures and function of the amino acid polymerase cyanophycin synthetase

Itai Sharon et al.

Summary: This study presents cryo-electron microscopy and X-ray crystallography structures of cyanophycin synthetases from three different bacteria, including cocomplex structures of CphA1 with ATP and cyanophycin polymer analogs at 2.6 angstrom resolution. These structures reveal two distinct tetrameric architectures, show the configuration of active sites and polymer-binding regions, indicate dynamic conformational changes, and afford insight into catalytic mechanism. Accompanying biochemical interrogation of substrate binding sites, catalytic centers, and oligomerization interfaces combine with the structures to provide a holistic understanding of cyanophycin biosynthesis.
