Complementary Role of Fishers' Experiential Knowledge to Conventional Science in Terms of Species-Specific Biological Traits and Population Changes in Azorean Waters

Local fishers experience can contribute to a better knowledge of marine resources in the Western Mediterranean Sea

Summary: In this study, fisher's perceptions in the Ebro Delta area, Western Mediterranean, were explored through questionnaires. The coherence of information provided by fishers was compared with scientific studies on the status of marine resources in the area, and temporal trends of key species were described using fishers' perceptions. The use of Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) as an alternative data source to fill the knowledge gap on benthic marine species was also explored. The study found that fishers' perceptions matched quantitative information from national statistics and stock assessment analyses, and provided important additional information on fishery characteristics and long-term changes in target species in the Western Mediterranean Sea. LEK was identified as a useful tool for increasing knowledge on ecosystem changes and the spatial distribution and temporal trends of vulnerable species.
