Assessment of groundwater salinity using principal component analysis (PCA): a case study from Mewat (Nuh), Haryana, India

G. Krishan et al.

Summary: Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to investigate the processes controlling groundwater salinity in the Mewat district of Haryana, India. The results showed increased salinity in groundwater samples collected in 2019 compared to 2018, indicating increased vulnerability of the Mewat aquifer due to decreased rainfall recharge. The impact of pollution was also more pronounced in 2019 due to declining recharge and increased recharge from other sources.

Fulvic acid isolation and characterisation from water of a Ramsar Lake Mansar, J&K, India

Arti Sharma et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to understand the chemical properties of aquatic fulvic acid in Lake Mansar and analyze the physical and chemical environment of the lake. The yield of fulvic acid in Lake Mansar was found to be low, and it was mainly derived from algae and non-vascular plants that have undergone less humification.

Hydrochemical assessments and driving forces of groundwater quality and potential health risks of sulfate in a coalfield, northern Ordos Basin, China

Shen Qu et al.

Summary: High concentrations of sulfate in groundwater in coalfields in Northwest, China pose potential health risks, especially for children. The water quality of confined groundwater is unsuitable for drinking and irrigation due to high TDS and saline affinity. The sources of sulfate include gypsum dissolution and irrigation activities. Measures should be taken to reduce the use of sulfur-containing fertilizers and discharge of sulfur-containing sewage, and water treatment is necessary to ensure human health.

Evaluation of groundwater quality for life-supporting activities: a case study of Haryana, India

Radhe Shyam et al.

Summary: The present study assessed the water quality in the Mewat district of Haryana, India by collecting groundwater samples and using various plots and indices to analyze the chemistry and suitability of the water for drinking and irrigation purposes. The study found that salinity was a major issue in the groundwater, especially during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. Further research is needed to address these groundwater issues and suggest management measures.

Groundwater Pollution and Human Health Risks in an Industrialized Region of Southern India: Impacts of the COVID-19 Lockdown and the Monsoon Seasonal Cycles

D. Karunanidhi et al.

Summary: Groundwater samples collected from 30 locations in the Coimbatore region of southern India showed a reduction in fluoride and nitrate pollution levels due to a decrease in industrial and agricultural activities during the COVID-19 lockdown, as well as dilution effects from seasonal rainfall. The chemical facies of groundwater shifted from Na-HCO3-Cl and Na-Cl to the Ca-HCO3 type, indicating the influence of factors such as mineral weathering, carbonate dissolution, and anthropogenic inputs on groundwater chemistry in the region. Overall, the findings suggest positive benefits to groundwater quality resulting from measures to control anthropogenic inputs of pollutants.

Summary: The research examined the suitability of groundwater for drinking purposes in the Bilate River Basin of Southern Main Ethiopian Rift, revealing that the majority of groundwater samples were not suitable for drinking due to high fluoride contamination. Children were found to be at the highest health risk, indicating the need for protective measures and water quality management.

Characterization of the hydrochemistry of water resources of the Weibei Plain, Northern China, as well as an assessment of the risk of high groundwater nitrate levels to human health

Jiutan Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the hydrochemistry of water resources in the Weibei Plain, Northern China, and found that high groundwater nitrate concentrations were mainly due to anthropogenic inputs, posing risks to human health. Groundwater showed relatively high NO3- concentrations, originating from agricultural production and domestic sewage, with implications for residents' health, especially infants and children.

Groundwater hydrochemistry, source identification and pollution assessment in intensive industrial areas, eastern Chinese loess plateau

Summary: Groundwater quality in the Fen River Basin (FRB) was mainly characterized as bicarbonate-calcium-sodium type water with variations in solute concentrations along the river, influenced by carbonate and silicate weathering, evaporites dissolution, and anthropogenic sources. The seasonal variations of selected trace elements were significant, with differences in pollution sources for heavy metals like Ag, Cd, Ni, Pb, and Tl. Anthropogenic inputs, especially related to coal industries, significantly impacted groundwater quality in the FRB.

Jiutan Liu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the hydrochemistry and human health risk of groundwater in the central region of Shandong Province, finding that most groundwater samples were suitable for drinking and agricultural irrigation, but posed unacceptable health risks. It is suggested to adjust permissible limits of water quality variables according to local conditions to ensure the sustainable management of groundwater and drinking water safety.

Isotopes (618O,6D and 3H) variations in groundwater with emphasis on salinization in the state of Punjab, India

Gopal Krishan et al.

Summary: Punjab's agrarian economy is facing challenges due to falling groundwater levels and deteriorating groundwater quality, with increasing salinity being a major concern. Irrigation needs are met by groundwater and canal water, but canal irrigation has led to waterlogging and subsequent salinization, rendering fertile land unproductive in the south-western part of Punjab. Further research is being done to understand the dynamics of groundwater recharge and the effects of evaporation on salinity levels.

Hydrochemistry, quality and potential health risk appraisal of nitrate enriched groundwater in the Nanchong area, southwestern China

Yunhui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study assessed groundwater quality and health risks in the Nanchong area, southwestern China, using statistical analysis, ion correlation, geomodelling analysis, entropy water quality index, and health risk assessment. The results showed that the concentrations of major ions in groundwater were mainly influenced by calcite dissolution and ion exchange, while nitrate concentrations were controlled by agricultural activities. Most groundwater samples were suitable for drinking, but some posed non-carcinogenic health risks for different population groups, with infants being at the highest risk. Targeted measures focusing on improving agricultural activities are needed to reduce nitrate-related health risks in the future.
